SALT LAKE CITY – New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said that quarterback Zach Wilson is headed to Los Angeles and his status will be updated following a ‘procedure’ on his ailing right knee.

Wilson is expected to undergo surgery to repair a damaged meniscus on Tuesday, August 16.

Wilson injured the knee on a scramble in the Jets preseason opener on August 12.

“He’s on his way to LA to have his procedure. And then we wait,” Saleh said of the quarterback.

Asked about Wilson’s expected recovery timeline, Saleh reiterated that the team expects to know more following surgery.

“I think that’s all going to depend on what happens with the surgery and the feedback we get from the doctors. We’ll be gathering all the information before we even come close to making a decision.”

About The Injury

Reports surfaced on Saturday morning that Wilson has a bone bruise and a meniscus tear and would miss only two to four weeks.

The news was first reported by Brian Costello of the New York Post.

ESPN’s Richi Cimini noted that the meniscus doesn’t need a full repair. Instead, it will be “just trimmed.” Wilson reportedly will pursue a second opinion.

A timeline of two to four weeks could put the former BYU star in a spot where he potentially plays in week one of the regular season, when the Jets face the Baltimore Ravens on September 11.

Last season, Wilson missed four games due to a PCL injury in his right knee.

If Zach Wilson is not ready to go as the starter, the Jets could turn to veteran Joe Flacco until the former No. 2 overall pick returns.

During his career at BYU, Wilson also dealt with his share of injuries in college.

Wilson played the entire 2020 season without an injury and put together one of the best individual quarterback seasons in BYU history.

In the 2019 season, he was sidelined due to a thumb injury that kept him out for three games.

Wilson was 3-of-5 for 23 yards and an interception before exiting the game due to an injury.
