SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy can now also be referred to as a former Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins waived Van Noy after one season with the team where he started in 13 games for the Phins and was a captain on Miami’s defense. Van Noy released a statement after being released.

“I am surprised and disappointed in their decision. As a captain, I gave my all to the team. I fought through a painful hip injury during the season, including spending a night in the hospital after a game. I was brought there to be a leader and I know my teammates looked up to and respected me. I am looking forward to making an impact on my next team, on and off the field.”

Miami makes Kyle Van Noy a “Cap Casualty”

Van Noy signed a 4-year, $51 million contract with Miami last season. He was paid $15 million in his one year with the Phins. According to ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe, Van Noy’s release is a “cap casualty” as the Dolphins will be able to save $9.75 million in cap space by releasing the former BYU star.

Van Noy’s 2020 season marked his seventh year in the NFL. He has played for three different franchises in Detroit, New England, and Miami. He’s a two-time Super Bowl Champion from his time with the Patriots. In total, he has piled up 358 tackles, 34 tackles for loss, and 23.5 sacks in his NFL career.

NFL free-agency period begins at 2 p.m. (MT) on March 17.
