SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill returned to camp after he and his wife Emily became first-time parents last week, welcoming Beau Hill into the world.

Now it’s back to work at Saints Training Camp where the do-it-all former BYU star sees all of his reps take place at quarterback.

This has been a unique training camp with zero preseason games. Throughout Hill’s NFL career that dates back to 2017, he’s shown flashes of his potential as an NFL QB in the preseason. But without that opportunity this year, how does he measure his growth and development?

Taysom Hill on his growth and development at QB

“It’s a little disappointing you know not having preseason games for a guy like me because it really is an opportunity to make sure that I’m getting live reps, game time reps in those games,” said Taysom Hill. “But I think right now the focus is making sure that I take every practice rep that I get like it’s a game situation. Make sure that I go out to practice, having everything ready to go.

“And I think we’ve really done a nice job this year of treating practices, you know like game reps, making sure we’re taking care of each other. But even if it’s not a full-speed tempo making sure mentally we’re sharp, I’m sharp as a quarterback to make sure that when we get to these first games, we’re ready to go.”

Even though Hill thrives with the Saints on gameday in the “F Position” where he plays RB/TE/WR/QB and anywhere else you can think of, his focus this past off-season was all about getting better as a quarterback. During his NFL career, Hill has completed six passes in regular-season action.

Taysom learning from Drew Brees

“You know as I get into the offseason, I’ll tell you, my focus is really on becoming as good of a quarterback as I can. You know, I’d say through my workout and stuff I made sure that I tried to implement enough, you know, strength training, conditioning, to make sure that I can do all the things that I’m asked to do.

“But right now is kind of a special time for me where I get to hone in really learn from Drew (Brees) on the field, learn from the coaches, be coached hard, and it is a really fun time for me to do that. I think as we look forward to the season we all know that there’s going to be different things to what I’m doing. But I also think that can continue to expand as well and maybe it means a little more quarterback looking into the future of the season, but some of those things we’ll continue to see how it plays out.”

There have been reports this past offseason that Hill is the heir apparent to the starting quarterback role in New Orleans after Drew Brees retires from the Saints. So this Training Camp could prove to be critical for what Hill can potentially become at quarterback in the Saints organization down the road.
