INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Former Utah Utes running back Zack Moss had some great results at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine despite suffering an injury but Moss will have the opportunity to improve his NFL Combine results at Utah’s Pro Day.

The 40-yard dash won’t stand out much because he injured his hamstring before he ran his 40 in the Combine but he decided to continue with the experience. He did not compete in the broad jump and the three-cone drill.

The NFL hands out prospect grades to each participant in the Combine that is based off of everything they do. The grading scale is from 5.0 to 8.0. An 8.0 grade is considered a perfect prospect. They gave Moss a 6.45 grade which is above “will be starter within first two seasons” and below “boom or bust prospect.”

NFL Draft Analyst Lance Zierlein compared Moss to Marion Barber. Pac-12 Networks Football Analyst Yogi Roth compared the former Ute to Frank Gore.

Here is what the NFL measured for Moss at the Combine.

  • Height: 5-9 3/8 (7th tallest)
  • Weight: 223 lbs. (second heaviest)
  • Arms: 31 2/8″ (3rd longest)
  • Wingspan: 75 4/8″ (3rd longest)
  • Hands: 9 1/4″

40-Yard Dash Results

Even though he injured his hamstring during the vertical jump, Moss decided to still run his 40-yard dash. The unofficial time was a 4.72 before the official time came in and was lowered to a 4.65. Moss has a chance to improve that time during Utah’s Pro Day on March 26.

With the injury, Moss finished towards the bottom of the 40-yard dash list among the running backs. After all of the results, Moss had a better time than TCU’s Sewo Olonilua (4.66), Tony Jones from Notre Dame (4.68) and Charlotte running back Benny LeMay (4.75).

Wisconsin star running back Jonathan Taylor had the best result in the 40-yard dash with a 4.39.

Bench Press

The former Ute had 19 reps of 225 lbs. on the bench press. That was good for middle of the pack among the running backs at the Combine at No. 7 out of 22 players that participated. Ole Miss RB Scottie Phillips had the most reps at 29 followed by TCU’s Sewo Olonilua with 25, Charlotte RB Benny LeMay and Illinois State’s James Robinson each had 24 reps. AJ Dillon from Boston College, Ohio State back J.K. Dobbins and UCLA’s Joshua Kelley each had 23 reps.

La’Mical Perine from Florida had 22 reps along with 20 from Cam Akers from Florida State, Raymond Calais from Louisiana-Lafayette and Darrynton Evans from Appalachian State.

Moss was tied with Jet Anderson from TCU and J.J. Taylor from Arizona.

Notable names that Moss out-benched includes Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor (17), LSU RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (15) and Arizona State back Eno Benjamin (12).

Vertical Jump

Moss jumped 33 inches in the vertical jump. That was the part of the Combine that he tweaked his hamstring. He posted better results in that drill than Jones (32.5), Ke’Shawn Vaughn from Vanderbilt (32), UCLA’s Joshua Kelley (31), Scottie Phillips of Ole Miss (30), Maryland’s Anthony McFarland (29.5) and LeMay (28.5).

Boston College running back A.J. Dillon had the best vertical jump at 41 inches.

20-Yard Shuttle

The former Ute completed the 20-yard shuttle in 4.37 seconds. He had a faster time than Georgia back Brian Herrien (4.40), Florida State RB Cam Akers (4.42) and Phillips (4.53).

Baylor running back JaMycal Hasty had the fastest 20-yard shuttle with a 4.03 time.
