Zach Wilson Ruled Out For Season Opener, Timetable For Return Is Set

SALT LAKE CITY – Former BYU quarterback and current New York Jets signal caller Zach Wilson has been ruled out for Week 1 of the 2022-23 NFL season.
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced that Joe Flacco will be the starter in Week 1, while also announcing when Zach Wilson will return to action.
“I really don’t want to talk about this situation anymore,” Saleh told the media on Wednesday morning. “The earliest he’s (Wilson) is going to be available is Pittsburgh (Week 4), that is the earliest. From everything we have gathered over the last couple of days, it’s not going to change but I’ll always leave that door open because you guys know me, I am the eternal optimist. We are going to make sure that both mind and body are 110% to make sure we do right by him. After talking to the doctors, it’s going to be that Pittsburgh week.”

In New York’s 2022 preseason opener, Wilson went 3/5 for 23 yards and one interception before suffering a bone bruise and torn meniscus on his only carry. Less than three weeks ago, Wilson underwent surgery to repair the injury.
During Wilson’s rookie campaign last season, the former BYU gunslinger missed four games because of a knee injury and threw for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a 55.6 completion rate.
Before his time in the NFL, the Corner Canyon High School product had a standout career at BYU. Wilson helped the Cougars to an 11-1 record during his final season in Provo.
Flacco will get the start for the Jets at quarterback and will face his former team the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, September 11 at 11 a.m. (MDT). The game will be televised on CBS and NFL Sunday Ticket.
