SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 11: Thairo Estrada #39 of the San Francisco Giants reacts after turning a double play to end the top of the seventh inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park on June 11, 2022 in San Francisco, California.

SALT LAKE CITY – Longtime rivals Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants wore Pride themed caps, becoming the first teams to wear LGBTQ+ flag colored logos in the same game.

The Giants and Dodgers wore the caps at San Francisco’s Oracle Park on Saturday, June 11.

Los Angeles first wore their Pride caps at Dodger Stadium for a Pride Night celebration June 3.

Along with the cap, San Francisco included an “SF” logo Pride patch worn on their right sleeve. According to MLB.com’s Sonja Chen, San Francisco was the first MLB team to include Pride colors when they did it last season. In addition, the Giants invited Dale Scott, the only umpire in professional baseball to come out as gay during his career, to deliver the pregame lineup cards. Amy Schneider, who is trans and a 40-time “Jeopardy!” champion, delivered the first pitch.

“To have the Dodgers join us in wearing the Pride cap is a powerful sign of unity,” Giants president and CEO Larry Baer said in a press release. “While our organizations have a long-storied rivalry on-field, we can use our collective platform to elevate the LGBTQ+ community and break down stereotypes.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the Dodgers’ Pride Night, “It just speaks to the Dodgers as far as being barrier-breakers, being forward-thinking and being all-inclusive. There’s so much discrimination in our world. That community has certainly been a victim of it. So I think they can also appreciate how welcoming and open the Dodgers are.”

The two franchises have been rivals dating back to 1884 when the Dodgers joined the National League. Both teams began their history on the east coast with the Giants playing in New York and the Dodgers calling Brooklyn home.

In 1957, each team relocated to the west coast with the Dodgers settling down in Los Angeles and the Giants heading north, finding a home in San Francisco.

The Giants defeated the Dodgers 3-2 in the middle game of a three game series.
