SANDY — Twenty-four hours ago, the biggest question surrounding Zavier Gozo was whether the Real Salt Lake star had recovered from the hip strain that kept him out of Saturday’s trip to St. Louis.

Now, the question is whether he’ll play for Real Salt Lake again.

The 19-year-old academy product returned to full training Monday and had been expected to start Tuesday night’s Leagues Cup opener against Tigres UANL at America First Field. Then English Premier League club Crystal Palace submitted an offer that brought both sides to the negotiating table.

The potential transfer carries an unusual wrinkle. Crystal Palace investor David Blitzer remains a minority owner of Real Salt Lake after Miller Sports + Entertainment purchased a controlling interest in the club last year. While the clubs operate independently, Blitzer’s ties to both organizations provide an uncommon connection between the negotiating parties.

Even with that connection, Real Salt Lake’s approach to Gozo remained unchanged throughout the process: the club hoped to keep the teenager through the season but was prepared to negotiate if a club met its valuation and the move made sense for the player.

Palace’s proposal appears to have been enough to open immediate negotiations.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no agreement had been finalized, and Gozo remained available for selection against Tigres. But with talks progressing rapidly, his status for the match remains fluid. Should negotiations reach a critical stage before kickoff, Real Salt Lake could opt not to risk its prized academy product.

Regardless of whether Gozo plays Tuesday night, an immediate transfer now appears increasingly likely.

Less than a week after representing MLS as an All-Star in Charlotte, Gozo returned to Utah expecting to rejoin Real Salt Lake’s playoff push. Instead, he may be just days away from trading America First Field for the Premier League.

A move months in the making

Interest in Gozo has been building throughout the season.

Earlier this year, The Athletic reported genuine interest from Aston Villa in England and Atlético Madrid in Spain, fueling widespread rumors that a move to Europe was all but complete. Social media speculation eventually escalated into claims that a transfer to Villa had already been agreed upon for the summer. Those reports never materialized.

Behind the scenes, however, Real Salt Lake’s position remained consistent. Club sources said they were willing to sell Gozo if a club met its valuation and the move made sense for the player. Until now, no offer had done both.

The Athletic first reported Crystal Palace’s pursuit Tuesday morning, with a potential fee in the $15 million range. Multiple sources subsequently confirmed to KSL Sports that Palace’s offer came close enough to Real Salt Lake’s valuation to trigger serious negotiations.

If completed at a reported fee of around $15 million, the move would rank among the largest outgoing transfers in Major League Soccer history, become the biggest sale in Real Salt Lake history, and mark the first direct transfer of an RSL academy product to the Premier League.

The negotiations also provide context for months of speculation surrounding Gozo’s future. Throughout that period, RSL continued to start him, build its attack around him, and showcase him on one of MLS’s biggest stages.

Until Palace’s offer prompted serious negotiations, Gozo was expected to return directly to the starting lineup after missing Saturday’s trip to St. Louis with a hip strain.

For a player whose rise has been one of the fastest in club history, the latest twist is another chapter in a journey that began in the RSL Academy.

From academy prospect to Premier League target

Three years after representing Real Salt Lake in the MLS NEXT All-Star Game, Gozo returned to Charlotte last week as a fan-voted MLS All-Star First XI selection after recording six goals and five assists in 16 league matches.

Speaking with KSL Sports during All-Star Week, Gozo reflected on how quickly everything had changed.

“Life moves so fast,” Gozo said after training with the MLS All-Stars. “Three years ago I was the one looking up to Diego Luna and Justin Glad. Now I’m in this position where younger players are looking up to me.”

Rather than talking about Europe or individual accolades, Gozo said his focus remained firmly on Real Salt Lake.

When asked after the MLS All-Star Game what he was most looking forward to upon returning to Utah, his answer was simple.

“Winning games,” Gozo told KSL Sports. “I’m always focused on the present and what we’re doing. All my teammates and the family we have there are counting on me and everyone else to win games and make a run in the playoffs.”

That return, however, could prove brief.

A hip strain suffered during All-Star Week sidelined him for Saturday’s 1-1 draw at St. Louis City SC before transfer negotiations suddenly overtook the conversation.

Why Europe came calling

The Utah native spent last offseason rebuilding parts of his game, including dedicating extra training sessions to strengthening his left foot.

When KSL Sports spoke with head coach Pablo Mastroeni after Gozo’s selection to the MLS All-Star First XI, Mastroeni described the teenager as possessing a rare athletic profile.

“For me he’s a unicorn,” Mastroeni said following Gozo’s All-Star selection. “Very rarely do you have a guy that is as fast as he is that can maintain the speed and endurance over 90 minutes.”

“From that perspective, he is world-class,” Mastroeni said. “I’m saying Premier League. I’m saying any league in the world.”

Veteran midfielder Stijn Spierings also pointed to Gozo’s versatility.

“He brings a lot of depth to the game,” Spierings told KSL Sports after Gozo’s All-Star selection. “He’s obviously very quick, so yeah, I like it to have him in front of me, but I like it to have him on the side as well.”

That combination of pace, endurance and positional versatility helped turn Gozo from a promising academy winger into one of Major League Soccer’s most sought-after young players.

One more game?

As of Tuesday afternoon, Gozo remained available for selection against Tigres.

Whether Tuesday night’s Leagues Cup opener becomes another appearance in Claret-and-Cobalt or the final one, the trajectory that has carried Gozo from the RSL Academy to the verge of the Premier League has unfolded far faster than almost anyone imagined.
