Mike Petke: ‘Would You Rather Have Fingers As Toes Or Toes As Fingers?’

Jul 3, 2019, 4:46 PM

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Would you rather have fingers as toes or toes as fingers? That’s the question that Mike Petke asked Brian Dunseth on the Coaches Show.

“I would rather have fingers as toes,” Dunseth said. “I would go to REI and buy those weird shoes that just slide on your feet and they look like fingers on your toes. I like the idea of being like a raccoon and hanging upside down from trees, which is better than me having nubs and not being able to do anything.”

Petke was without his family for two weeks as they were in Spain while his son was playing soccer.

“The first day and a half without them was incredible,” Petke said.

The RSL head coach waited until the last day before his family returned home before he cleaned the house.

“On the third day, I found myself jumping into my job and I think I jump into my job pretty seriously all the time now,” Petke said. “Having said that, maybe I wasn’t doing it more than I thought I was.”

RSL Curriculum

Dunseth pointed out on the show that Petke and his staff have a curriculum about the culture of the club.

“We locked ourselves (coaching staff) at a beautiful place in Park City for two days and we spent 10 hours a day on an idea that I came up with that changed dramatically because of the people around me that I respect,” Petke mentioned. “They had better ideas based within my core principles.

Petke stated that even that changes on a game-by-game basis and it isn’t really a change, it’s a tweak.

“We are not going to go out and get somebody that is not going to fit loosely within how we want to play,” he added.

He ended the show with another unusual question:

“Would you rather talk like Yoda (from Star Wars) or breathe like Darth Vader?”

The Mike Petke Coaches Show airs every week on sports.ksl.com and the KSL TV app.
