VANCOUVER — For the third year in a row, Real Salt Lake dropped its MLS season-opener with a 1-0 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place on Saturday.

After an impressive defensive showing early, RSL gave up the match’s only score in the second half and failed to erase the deficit.

The effort was valiant, especially considering the club was missing key pieces such as Diego Luna and Emeka Eneli. Regardless, they will return home with a 0-1 record to host the Seattle Sounders next weekend.

First Half

Team defense was the story through the first 45′ for RSL.

Vancouver had the advantage in shots attempted, shots on goal, and time of possession. However, Real kept the home squad off the sheet.

Of course, the back line and goalkeeper Rafael Cabral did their job. But the difference was made by the midfielders and wingers, who constantly got back in time to muck things up when the Whitecaps had the ball.

That said, the first half wasn’t without its threatening attacks. In the 16th minute, Thomas Müller unloaded from above the penalty box, but his shot was sent back at him by the right post. About 10 minutes later, a jumble of players in the six-yard box created something of a hockey screen, but the ball was eventually sent out after a series of blocks and missed attempts.

Real Salt Lake ended with six shots in the half, with one on goal. None of which were as threatening as Vancouver’s best.

Still, the defense held strong on both ends, and the first half of the season came to a close with a 0-0 scoreline.

Second Half

The first ten minutes after the break saw a shot attempt for each side and a handful of fouls.

In the 57th, Vancouver was finally able to break through. After a deflection inside the box, the ball found its way to Aziel Jackson, who buried it into the bottom eight corner.

After conceding, it looked like all of the wind was taken from Real Salt Lake’s sails.

The first substitutions shortly followed, but it wasn’t until the second round of subs that it appeared Real got a bit of a spark back.

In the 79th, RSL broke off on a 3-on-1 break. Sergi Solans crossed into the 18-yard box, with a diving winger on each side of him, but he failed to make the extra pass and the Whitecaps defenseman was able to stifle the drive.

The next threatening attack came in the 88th as Zavier Gozo barreled down from the right side. He was able to get the first shot on goal of the half for Real, but Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka was able to make the routine save as the ball rolled right at him.

Seven minutes of stoppage time were added to the end of regulation, giving RSL one last chance to steal a point up north.

The Whitecaps spaced out their set, playing a game of keepaway for basically the entirety of the first four minutes. Real did have a few chances to possess late in the game, but ultimately, no real attack could be pieced together, and the final whistle was blown.
