Real Salt Lake winless in 8th straight MLS match as Rapids retain Rocky Mountain Cup

Aug 29, 2026, 10:49 PM

SANDY — Real Salt Lake’s skid in MLS play since returning from the FIFA men’s World Cup break spiraled into something more Saturday night.

Reggie Cannon scored the only goal of the match off a corner kick in the 69th minute as the Colorado Rapids retained possession of the Rocky Mountain Cup traveling supporters’ trophy with a 1-0 win in Commerce City, Colorado.

The Rapids out-shot RSL 14-4, holding the visitors without a shot on goal to retain possession of the Rocky Mountain Cup for a third straight year.

It’s the fifth-straight win at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park for the Rapids, who climbed to seventh in the Western Conference with a 10-11-1 overall record and wins over Austin, Kansas City, Los Angeles and Salt Lake by a combined 5-0.

RSL (8-9-4, 28 points) dropped to ninth in the West — one point outside of the playoff line with 13 games remaining after losing its fourth straight match across all competitions during an eight-match winless slide in MLS play dating back to May 16.

Back then, Salt Lake beat Colorado 2-1 with goals from Zavier Gozo and Sergi Solans. The latter recently signed a new contract keeping him in Claret-and-Cobalt for up to five more years, while Gozo has made his Premier League debut with Crystal Palace.

With four days left before the close of the summer transfer window, RSL has struggled to fill Gozo’s role as a wingback on the right side of the pitch. Fellow Utah native Zach Booth was promising before suffering a hamstring injury Aug. 15 against Minnesota, and the position has been a revolving door with DeAndre Yedlin, Saba Lobjanidze and Juan Manuel Sanabria filling the role.

Morgan Guilavogui had the visitors’ best look at an equalizer in the final minute of second-half stoppage time. But his shot — which was saved by Colorado goalkeeper Adam Beaudry — was waived offside by the assistant referee.

Colorado took control of the first half, dominating possession with 63% and out-shooting the visitors 8-2 including the only three shots on target before halftime.

The Rapids took the lead in the 58th minute when Cannon flew in unmarked at the back post to convert Youssef Maziz corner kick into a 1-0 lead.

“If you strip it all away, what has to improve is our set-piece defending,” RSL manager Pablo Mastroeni said. “It’s a 0-0 game, we’re away in a derby; that was otherwise a good result in the moment.”

Cannon nearly bagged a brace with about 10 minutes remaining. But his quick-striking drive into the box caromed out for a corner kick to keep the hosts up, 1-0.

Two minutes later, designated-player forward Morgan Guilavogui earned a yellow card — meaning he will miss Salt Lake’s home match against LAFC next Saturday, Sept. 5.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT on Apple TV.
