SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The NBA set a deadline for early entrants to declare for the 2020 NBA Draft, according to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

Early entry players have until August 17 to declare that they are entering the 2020 NBA Draft, according to a memo obtained by Wojnarowski.

On Saturday, June 20, the ESPN insider reported that the new deadline is “pending the NBA finalizing an agreement with the players’ union on system rule changes in the collective bargaining agreement related to the resumption of the 2019-20 season.”

NBA Draft

Wojnarowski also highlighted that the league has set October 16 as the date for the 2020 NBA Draft. Previous reports stated that the league would take place a day earlier on October 15.

Due to the delayed completion of the NBA season, the league had to move the Draft to October. The 2020 NBA Draft was originally scheduled to take place on June 25.

Prior to moving the Draft, the early entry deadline for players was April 26.

In addition to moving the Draft, the league rescheduled the 2020 NBA Draft Lottery to August 25. The Draft Lottery was previously scheduled to take place on May 19.

NCAA Deadline

In early June, the NCAA announced its deadline for college basketball players to withdraw their names from the 2020 NBA Draft and maintain eligibility.

According to the NCAA, men’s basketball players have until 10 days after the NBA Draft Combine or August 3, “whichever comes first, to withdraw from the postponed 2020 NBA draft and retain their eligibility.”

“This provides the utmost flexibility to student-athletes testing the waters to make the most informed decision about their future during this uncertain time,” NCAA senior vice president for basketball Dan Gavitt said in a statement. “And by deciding before classes start for the fall semester, it also encourages student-athletes who choose to return to school to be fully engaged in their academic pursuits and the tremendous experience and opportunity to play college basketball.”

NBA Free Agency

On Saturday, Wojnarowski reported that the NBA free agency would begin on October 18 and a moratorium period would occur from October 19-23.
