Darryn Peterson to keep No. 22 jersey with Utah Jazz

SALT LAKE CITY — After getting selected with the second overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, Kansas guard Darryn Peterson will be bringing his college jersey number to the pros.
Kyle Filipowski wore No. 22 in his first two seasons with the Jazz, but agreed to give up the number to Utah’s incoming rookie.

The topic of jersey number actually came up in Brooklyn right after Peterson got drafted.
I’m going to have to see what (Kyle Filipowski) is willing to do to give (No. 22) up. I might try to rock No. 8. Kobe vibes. I just got Kobe tattooed on my shoulder.
Unluckily, No. 8 is also taken in Utah by Isaiah Collier. But it all seemed to work itself out in the end.
Peterson wore No. 22 in high school and in college to pay homage to his father, Darryl Peterson II, who wore the number for the Akron Zips for four years in the early 2000s.
Filipowski wore No. 30 in college at Duke. That number was last worn by Jusuf Nurkic in the 2025-26 season.
About Darryn Peterson
Peterson, born in Northeast Ohio, quickly rose the ranks as one of the best basketball prospects in the country.
He played prep basketball at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in his home state before moving to West Virginia and then California for his junior and senior years.
On November 1, 2024, Peterson made his commitment to the University of Kansas.
In his lone year with the Jayhawks, Peterson averaged 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists on 43.8/38.2/82.6 shooting splits.
The guard scored 20 or more points in 12 of his 24 college games and was never held to single digits. He was not a lockdown defender in college, but he showed stronger defensive instincts than most freshmen. His effort and positioning produced solid on-ball results, while his well-timed help defense generated a high number of steals and deflections.
In 2026, the Utah Jazz selected Peterson with the No. 2 overall pick, tied for the highest selection in the franchises history.
