Darryn Peterson ready to be ‘face of the franchise’ for Utah Jazz

SALT LAKE CITY  – Darryn Peterson did not have to wait long to hear his name called.

But after AJ Dybantsa came off the board first, the newest Utah Jazz guard found himself with something he believes every great player needs: a reason to remember who went ahead of him.

The Jazz selected Peterson with the No. 2 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, adding one of the most talented guards in the class to a roster that is trying to turn years of rebuilding into something more urgent. For Utah, Peterson is not just another young piece. He is the kind of high-upside creator who could help define the next era of Jazz basketball.

Peterson made that clear in an exclusive post-draft interview with KSL Sports Zone, where his excitement about landing in Utah came with an edge. He is happy to be a member of the Jazz, but he is not pretending that the first pick did not matter.

“I’m super motivated by it, but it’s behind me now. I can’t go back and change anything,” Peterson said when asked about not being the first overall pick. “I’m with the Jazz, and I’m super excited to get there. It’ll definitely keep this chip on my shoulder throughout my whole career, and I take it out on everybody, not just that guy in particular.”

That competitive streak is part of what makes Peterson such an intriguing addition for Utah.

The Jazz have spent the past few seasons collecting talent. Now, they may have the kind of backcourt pairing that gives the rebuild a clearer direction.

The 6’6” combo guard brings size, scoring touch, and on-ball confidence to a lineup expected to feature former All-Stars Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr., 2025 fifth overall pick Ace Bailey, and breakout guard Keyonte George.

Peterson already sees the fit with George.

“With Keyonte, we’re two dynamic guards,” Peterson said. “I think we’ll be one of the best backcourts in the league, early.”

There is still some unknown attached to Peterson’s projection.

Injuries limited him to just 24 games and inconsistent minutes during his lone collegiate season at Kansas, leaving NBA teams to weigh his flashes against a smaller sample size.

But if those concerns are behind him, Peterson has the talent to become much more than a high draft pick. He has the tools to be a perennial All-Star, a two-way impact player, and a primary factor in Utah’s push back toward contention.

Peterson is not easing into that expectation. His message to Jazz fans was direct: “I’m ready to go be that guy, be the face of the franchise.”
