ESPN: Speculation ‘Snyder Is Likely’ Leaving Jazz

SALT LAKE CITY – According to the latest guess from ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Quin Snyder and the Utah Jazz are headed for a separation.

In a podcast appearance with Brian Windhorst, MacMahon laid out the issues facing Snyder and the Jazz and offered his thoughts on the coach’s future.

“My informed speculation is that Quin Snyder is likely going to end up leaving,” MacMahon said.

Earlier this week MacMahon reported that there were “philosophical issues” that have come between Snyder and the Jazz front office that have put his future in doubt.

Though Snyder has one more year on his contract, and an option for the 2023-24 season, he’s yet to commit to a future with the team.

“It’s not about money,” MacMahon said. “There’s an extension offer — he turned down an extension last summer. There’s an extension offered still on the table, I don’t have exact terms at it, but it would put him up there with the highest-paid coaches in the NBA.”

In eight seasons, Snyder has led the Jazz to six consecutive playoff appearances, the longest streak of any Western Conference team. However, the Jazz have gotten out of the first round only three times during the stretch, and have blown playoff series leads in each of the last three seasons.

The toll of losing, and the difficult pathway to improvement for the Jazz could end Snyder’s run in Utah.

“I get the sense that he’s going to end up ultimately taking the year off,” MacMahon said of Snyder’s future. “Spending time with family, relax, and recharging.”

Though Jazz CEO Danny Ainge hasn’t spoken about Snyder’s future with the team, General Manager Justin Zanik said the franchise wants the coach back.

“I don’t know how I can make it any more clear, Quin Snyder is one of the best coaches in the NBA,” Zanik said after the team was eliminated from the playoffs. “There is no other partner that I would rather have as a coach, a leader of our players, and a partner in the front office than Quin Snyder.”

With the NBA Draft less than three weeks away, and free agency opening in July, both the Jazz and Snyder would benefit from finding a resolution to their standoff sooner rather than later.
