Jazz Light It Up In Opening Quarter, Take Commanding Lead Over Pelicans

NEW ORLEANS – It felt like the Utah Jazz could do no wrong in the first quarter against the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday.
The score reflected that as Utah led 38-19 going into the second.

Utah shot a blistering 68.2 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three in the quarter. They held New Orleans to just 34.8 percent during that same stretch.
Other than the obvious hot hand, the rebounding battle was another major contributor.
After getting demolished on the boards in New Orleans on Friday, Utah took the early advantage in that category, 13-5.

Keyonte George was Utah’s leading scorer in the first with 10 points.
This included a run of seven straight early on as the Jazz jumped out to a 14-0 lead after tip-off.
West’s Worst Rematch Following Pelicans Win
The bottom two seeds in the Western Conference will face off for a second straight game at Smoothie King Center on Monday.
New Orleans came away with a convincing 136-123 victory which saw them outrebound the Jazz by 16 and shoot nearly 10 percent better from three.
Although these are the worst two teams in the West, their recent stretch of games couldn’t look more different. The Pelicans had a slow start to the season as they couldn’t escape the injury bug. But, they have enjoyed better health as of late and won four of their last five games. The only loss coming to the widely-considered championship-favorite Boston Celtics.
Meanwhile, the Jazz are far from seeing any type of midseason jump. They have lost five of their last six and slid down to 28th overall in the NBA.
