SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Jazz have promoted Marquis Newman to Director of Pro Personnel, replacing the position left vacant when David Fredman’s contract expired last month.
The move comes among a series of shakeups in the Jazz front office after it was announced that Vice President of Basketball Operations Dennis Lindsey was stepping down from his position to take an advisory role with the team late last month.
Lindsey had served in a front-office role within the Jazz organization since 2013 and was promoted to his role as VP in 2019.

Fredman began his career as an assistant coach with the Jazz in 1987 before leaving the organization for the Denver Nuggets in the early 2000s. He returned to the Jazz as the team’s head scout in 2008 and was promoted to Director of Pro Personnel in 2013.
Newman began his career with the Jazz in 2014 as a Basketball Operations Assistant and was promoted to Coordinator of Pro Scouting in 2018. Previously Newman attended the University of Utah where he majored in Business Administration and Management.
The Director of Pro Personnel is tasked with being familiar with pro players across the NBA landscape, including international basketball.
Justin Zanik is the Jazz’s current General Manager and has been with the team over two separate stints. Zanik was originally hired by the Jazz in 2013 as assistant general manager but left the team to serve in the same role for the Milwaukee Bucks in 2016.
He then returned to the Jazz in 2017, and in 2019, Zanik was promoted to general manager assuming day-to-day basketball operations responsibilities.
Newman will also serve as the Salt Lake City Stars Assistant General Manager.
