Big 12 basketball to feature No. 1 recruit for second consecutive year

SALT LAKE CITY – Big 12 basketball will be the home of the number one basketball recruit in the country for the second consecutive year.

Tyran Stokes of Louisville, Kentucky, has committed to play for the Kansas Jayhawks.

No. 1 recruit Tyran Stokes commits to the Kansas Jayhawks

Stokes is ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the class of 2026 by the 247Sports Composite rankings. The 6-foot-7 guard/forward picked Kansas over Kentucky and Oregon.

Stokes made his commitment on Tuesday night during ESPN’s Inside the NBA with Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny “The Jet” Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal.

He unwrapped a blue package for his commitment announcement that featured him on an NBA2K cover donning a Kansas jersey.

Last season, the No. 1 recruit in the 247Sports Composite rankings was BYU star AJ Dybantsa, who is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft after establishing himself as the nation’s leading scorer in his one season with the Cougars and in the Big 12.

Stokes and Dybantsa were once high school teammates at Prolific Prep and were also teammates on the Nike EYBL circuit for a season with the Oakland Soldiers. Then Stokes transferred to Notre Dame High School in California before wrapping up his high school career at Rainier Beach in Seattle, Washington.

The addition of Stokes gives Kansas its second five-star recruit in the class of 2026, joining Taylen Kinney from Overtime Elite.

Stokes will be tasked to help lead a Kansas program that hasn’t reached the Sweet 16 since its National Championship season in 2022.

Out of the top-10 high school prospects in the class of 2026 from the 247Sports Composite, four are going to play in the Big 12 Conference. Those players include Stokes (Kansas), shooting guard Caleb Holt (No. 3, Arizona), combo guard Dylan Mingo (No. 6, Baylor), and wing Bruce Branch III (No. 7, BYU).
