BYU basketball ends a two-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 73-69 victory over West Virginia.

The Cougars trailed for more than 30 minutes in the game. West Virginia led throughout the second half, but never could pull away. The Mountaineers kept the lead in the second half until Mihailo Boskovic hit a three-pointer with 5:29 remaining to give BYU a 63-62 lead.

BYU defeats West Virginia, 73-69

West Virginia was able to respond and took a 69-68 lead with 2:13 left after Toby Okani hit a second consecutive layup.

But that was the final point from the Mountaineers.

BYU closed the game on a 5-0 run to earn the 73-69 win. The dagger was a Mihailo Boskovic layup that resulted in an and-one opportunity with nine seconds left.

Boskovic had six points in nine minutes of action.

Complete team win

It was a balanced effort from BYU’s entire team. Ten different players scored to give the Cougars a coveted Quad 1 road victory and a split on the eastern Big 12 road trip that included a loss at Cincinnati on Saturday.

BYU’s heralded freshmen Egor Demin and Kanon Catchings led the way in scoring with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Demin also had three rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes of action.

Slowed down Javon Small

Defensively, BYU slowed down West Virginia’s Big 12 Player of the Year candidate, Javon Small. The former Oklahoma State guard finished with nine points and attempted only four shots. However, he still facilitated his Mountaineer teammates’ efforts, putting together nine assists in the four-point loss.

It was only the second time this season that Small finished in single-digits for scoring. BYU senior Mawot Mag was the primary defender on Small.

BYU’s bench production shined as the Cougars outscored West Virginia’s second 38-18.

Along with the six points from Boskovic, Trey Stewart gave a strong boost with a season-high points off the bench. It was the first time in his career that he hit two three-pointers in a game.

The win comes on a night when BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe announced his retirement after 20 years of overseeing the athletic department. Holmoe attended the WVU Coliseum for BYU’s win, which should boost their NCAA Tournament resume.

BYU improves to 7-6 in Big 12 play and 16-8 overall. West Virginia falls to 15-9 overall and is now 6-7 in the Big 12.
