PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s basketball has laid a strong foundation in the Lee Cummard era.
In his first season as head coach, the former BYU basketball star has led BYU to a 20-win season.
BYU women’s basketball wins 20 games in a season for the first time since 2022
It’s the first 20-win season for BYU women’s basketball since joining the Big 12 Conference in 2023. The first 20-win campaign since the 2022 season, when Jeff Judkins, Cummard’s former boss, led the program.

“It’s a great thing. It’s something that we talked about indirectly at the beginning of the summer as we climbed this mountain,” said BYU coach Lee Cummard to the BYU Sports Network after Saturday’s win over Colorado.
“There are points along the way that we haven’t done in this league. Twenty wins were kind of brushed over, but it’s something we haven’t done in a while. We’re on this journey together, there’s just different things that are going to happen.”
Three-game win streak to close out the regular season
BYU closed the regular season with three wins, two of which were on the road. An impressive accomplishment to respond after suffering a surprising loss at home to Cincinnati on February 17.
The Cougars knocked off rival Utah on February 21 behind 37 points from star Delaney Gibb. BYU completed a regular-season sweep of its rivals in the process.
Then, BYU continued its two-game road swing with a victory at Arizona State. BYU stormed back from a 13-point halftime deficit and won the game with its defense.
They held Arizona State to only 30 points in the second half, handing the Sun Devils only their second home loss of the season.
BYU closed out the regular season at home in front of a crowd of 4,313 fans with a 75-62 win over Colorado. The Cougars outscored Colorado 27-6 in the fourth quarter to secure the Senior Day victory.
Two weeks earlier, BYU lost to Colorado in Boulder by 30 points.
The victory over the Buffs gave BYU a 9-9 record in Big 12 play for the season and a final regular-season mark of 20-10.
Cougars enter the postseason with momentum
BYU now turns its attention to the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City later this week with some momentum after closing the regular season on a high note.
“We now have our most wins in this league. We want to go to the conference tournament and win a game. We have yet to do that,” Cummard said to the BYU Sports Network. “So just some of these data points that we’re all working towards. But mostly, the team is so special right now. It’s so fun to be around … it’s a pleasure to coach [this team].”
