The win improves BYU’s record to 3-0 overall in the 2025-26 season.
Instant takeaways from the Cougars’ non-conference win.
Rob Wright puts together a career-high performance
In only his third game as a BYU Cougar, Baylor transfer point guard Robert Wright III scored a career-high. Wright, a Wilmington, Delaware native, scored 26 points.
His previous career-high was 24 points last season for Baylor in a comeback win over the Kansas Jayhawks.
Wright was a steady force in the first half, while the rest of his BYU teammates were looking to find their offensive rhythm. The star guard 11 points in the first half and was the only player to hit a three-pointer.
On Wright’s career night, it wasn’t only the scoring that was impressive. He also dished out nine assists and grabbed nine rebounds.
BYU’s “Big 3” can score in bunches
Around the 9:20 mark of the second half, Richie Saunders came up with a blocked shot that Rob Wright gathered, leading to a fastbreak outlet for AJ Dybantsa on a slam dunk.
Dybantsa and the Marriott Center crowd were fired up after that sequence.
The next offensive series, Dybantsa had a putback slam dunk that kept the energy up in the Marriott Center as BYU started to pull away from the pesky Delaware Blue Hens.
It was an example of how explosive BYU’s headline players can be on a moment’s notice.
BYU’s “Big 3” combined for 70 of their 85 points tonight. That’s a big-time number, but on the other hand, they need more from the rest of the roster going forward.
First glimpse this season of how potent BYU basketball can be from three-point range
BYU entered the night ranked 275th nationally in three-point shooting, knocking down 28.5% of their attempts through the first two games. The early shooting woes turned the corner in the second half against the Blue Hens.
In the first half versus Delaware, BYU only knocked down one of its 12 attempts from beyond the arc. That was at the 2:50 mark of the half when Rob Wright buried a three from the top of the key.
This year’s team is built differently than years past, with the athletes who can get to the rim with ease. However, what makes this team potentially dangerous in making a deep NCAA run is its shooters. Having a willing passer like AJ Dybantsa, he needs to be surrounded by shooters.
That high-level shooting ability showed itself in the second half. BYU knocked down three 3-pointers before the under-16 timeout.
At the midway point of the second half, BYU hit eight of its first 11 attempts, with four coming from Richie Saunders.
Entering the final media timeout, BYU knocked down 11-of-16 threes with 2:22 to go, and didn’t seem to be letting up as AJ Dybantsa was waiting to check back in at the scorer’s table with a 23-point lead.
Delaware made BYU work more than expected
The Blue Hens put up a valiant effort against BYU on Tuesday night. Delaware entered the game shorthanded and then had a huge momentum swing when Tyler Houser missed a layup that would have put them up by eight points.
Instead, it was a miss that also saw starting Jameel Brown go down with an injury. The play continued as BYU had possession. BYU capitalized on the advantage as Richie Saunders knocked down a three, closing out the five-point swing.
From there, BYU was off to the races for a comfortable 85-68 win.
It was a good lesson for BYU not to look ahead. With the Top 10 showdown against UConn coming up, this was an easy lookahead spot. BYU looked like the Top 10 they are currently ranked as in the second half, but not after Delaware made things tough in the first half.
