BYU Commit Ryder Lyons Puts Up Huge Numbers In Folsom Opener

Aug 24, 2025, 9:40 PM | Updated: Aug 25, 2025, 11:14 pm

BYU football quarterback commit Ryder Lyons was excellent in his season-opening performance of his high school senior year.

Lyons led Northern California powerhouse Folsom High School to a 51-13 victory over fellow prep power in California, Grant High School.

In the national television showcase game, Lyons passed for 408 yards and four passing touchdowns, and he added a rushing touchdown as well.

The BYU commit completed 31 of his 37 pass attempts.

Throughout the ESPN broadcast, Lyons was consistently referred to as the “BYU commit.” During halftime, with Folsom up by two scores, former BYU National Champion Trevor Matich was in the Bristol studios breaking down Lyons’ game and saying Cougar fans should be excited to have him in Provo.

Lyons lived up to his high recruiting status in the season-opener for Folsom, and it happened on a night where Grant High was doing a lot of talking.

Before the game, Grant High was flagged for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for trash-talking Folsom players during warmups.

Then, in the first half, there was a sequence where a Grant player ripped Lyons’ helmet off. Lyons continued to scramble, doing his best Steve Young impression, but then it ended with another Grant defender giving Lyons a bump to the ground.

Lyons’ first touchdown pass of the year was a 67-yard deep ball to junior wide receiver Rob Larson.

His last touchdown pass of the game was a 20-yard strike on the first play of the fourth quarter. That was it for Lyons for the remainder of the night, as the game then shifted to a running clock due to California high school rules when an opponent is up by more than 35 points.

Lyons’ backup Brody Rudnicki, a BYU target in the 2027 class, closed out the game with a touchdown pass of his own.

After the game was over and when the handshake line concluded, Lyons hit a backflip to celebrate the big win.

A 6-foot-2.5, 215-pound quarterback, Lyons is currently ranked as the 27th overall prospect in the country by the 247Sports Composite rankings in the class of 2026, eight spots down from when he committed to BYU over Oregon in June.

Next up for Lyons and Folsom High is another road matchup. This time against Junipero Serra on Saturday, August 30 at 3:30 p.m. (MDT)/2:30 p.m. (PDT).
