Washington V. California Game Off In First COVID-19 Cancellation Of 2020 Pac-12 Season

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – In the first week of the 2020 Pac-12 season Washington’s game against California has been canceled due to COVID-19.
According to the Pac-12, Cal requested for the game to be canceled because they do not have the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game because of a positive COVID-19 test causing the isolation of student-athletes under the contact tracing protocol.

The 2020 Pac-12 season consists of seven games to be played in seven weeks, so there will not be an opportunity for either team to make up the canceled game.

“Our students, coaches and staff have put in an incredible amount of hard work to get to this point and we are deeply disappointed they won’t have the opportunity to compete Saturday in Berkeley. I’m also disappointed for Husky Nation, they have been so patient and supportive, and we know they couldn’t wait to cheer on our Dawgs this weekend,” said Washington AD Jen Cohen, “With that said, the policies and protocols developed by the Pac-12, local and state officials placed the health and safety of students, coaches and staff at the forefront. We will now turn our attention to next week and start our preparations for Oregon State.”
So far this is the only Pac-12 game to be impacted by COVID-19 testing and contact tracing protocols. Utah’s game against Arizona is still on for Saturday at 1:30 MT.
