BYU’s Bear Bachmeier Bashes His Way To Fifth Big 12 Weekly Honor

PROVO, Utah – From a fall camp quarterback competition to seemingly a runaway pick for Big 12 Freshman of the Year, BYU QB Bear Bachmeier added another award to his trophy case after helping lift No. 11 BYU past Utah in the Holy War.
The Big 12 named Bachmeier Freshman of the Week for the third consecutive time and fifth time in eight weeks on Monday, October 20.

Since earning the starting nod in camp, Bachmeier has led the Cougars to an unblemished 7-0 start while gowing by leaps and bounds each week.
He has completed 104 of 166 passes (62.7 percent) for 1,386 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. Bachmeier has shown an immediate ability to learn from his mistakes, responding to each of his interceptions with more effective performance afterward.
His 359 yards on the ground are 17th in the Big 12 and his eight TDs are tied with Texas Tech RB Cameron Dickey for the conference lead. While LJ Martin leads the league with 774 rushing yards, Bachmeier has been a potent second option as the Cougars wear defenses down late in games.

While his passing stats (166 yards, TD) don’t jump off the page, his toughness, intelligence, and leadership leave no doubt the Bachmeier was to tip of the spear in Saturday’s thrilling rivalry win over Utah.
The final touchdown, a 22-yard show of force will forever live in Holy War lore after he dragged a defender across the goal line for the game-winning score.

He ended the day with 76 rushing yards and the late touchdown, increasing his program freshman QB record to eight.
