Bear Bachmeier Finds Chase Roberts For First Career Touchdown Pass

PROVO, Utah – True freshman starting quarterback Bear Bachmeier connected with senior captain Chase Roberts for the first touchdown pass of his college career. The touchdown gave BYU a 14-0 first quarter lead over Portland State.

The BYU Cougars began the 2025 season by hosting the Portland State Vikings at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, August 30.

Leading 7-0 after a Jack Kelly special teams scoop and score, BYU’s offense showed some signs of life late in the opening period.

Bachmeier led his troops into the red zone with the help of a bruising, tackle-busting, 49-yard run from LJ Martin.

Three plays later, Bachmeier took the snap and quickly found Roberts in the flat. The athletic wideout used a block to trot into the end zone for the first offensive TD of the season.

Bachmeier has completed 3-of-6 passes for two touchdowns. He’s added five yards on the ground. He joins Taysom Hill, Tanner Mangum, and Zach Wilson as true freshmen in program history to throw multiple TD passes in his first career start.

About Bear Bachmeier

Bachmeier was one of the most decorated recruits in the country during his prep football career at Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta, California.

He was considered a four-star recruit by on3 and Rivals, while ESPN listed Bachmeier as the 11th-best QB prospect in the class. Not a one-trick pony, Bachmeier also earned First Team All-Southwestern in 2024 while playing baseball. He lettered once in basketball.

Bachmeier finished his prep career with 6,810 passing yards and 59 touchdowns. The dual-threat QB also picked up 1,724 yards on the ground and scored 33 times. He averaged an astounding 10.6 yards per carry and 9.6 yards per completion.

Bachmeier signed with BYU’s week 2 opponent, the Stanford Cardinal, out of high school, spending the spring of 2025 working with the team before electing to transfer to BYU.

At 6’2 and 225 pounds, Bachmeier already has the requisite size to withstand the pounding that a Power Five QB will take over the course of a season.

His brother, Hank, played quarterback at Boise State, Louisiana Tech, and Wake Forest. Another brother, Tiger, is a junior wide receiver at BYU. His sister, Ella,  ran track at the University of Redlands.
