PROVO, Utah – BYU’s football schedule is currently void of any Power 5 teams and it very likely will stay that way, and while it is disappointing that the schedule went from six down to zero.

BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe has been adding Group of Five teams like Navy and Army, with the latest being Western Kentucky, Texas State, and Texas-San Antonio. While these are football games to fill out a schedule it is a far cry from who BYU had initially, it is still football which is something that no other team in the state of Utah can say.

KSL Sports Scott Mitchell praises this schedule that Holmoe was able to put together in a last-minute fashion. If this schedule was built in a typical season, he said would, “absolutely be rolling my eyeballs.”

Yet, it is the complete opposite and the Cougars are somehow on track to play a 10-game schedule and getting some decent Group of Five teams on the schedule.

Do Fans Care Who Is On The Schedule?

BYU football fans may have some disappointment that Michigan State and Missouri are not coming to Provo, but it beats the fact that playing zero football games was a real possibility this year.

Give kudos to athletic director Tom Holmoe who has done a great job in lining up games in a matter of weeks when normally getting these games can sometimes take months to finalize.

That is how Mitchell feels about this schedule. It was built and still being built in a truncated form and with that, it is great to have college football in the state of Utah. Fans of football and fans of BYU football should be doing cartwheels over having games this year.

“Under these circumstances, if I was any team in the state of Utah, if I was any team in the Pac-12, if I was any team in the Big Ten, I would be elated right now,” Mitchell said. “It’s not just cupcakes. This is awesome. People are going to show up and they’re just they’re going to bathe in the and the sunlight of the of having fall football at LaVelle Edwards Stadium.

“People are going to be rolling around in the stands to Cougar Hotels are going to go through the roof. People are going to be buying them. It’s going to be mass hysteria. It is. I mean I mean, people will be excited to actually have college football and watch it.”

COVID-19 has ripped up the sports schedule, fans are really happy for any type of football that is being played this fall. Plus, this type of schedule is set up perfectly for the Cougars to have a really good season, and dare we mention undefeated?

“I don’t think people even care,” Mitchell added. “Here’s what will make this even nicer and it’s a psychological thing. All right? There’s no validity to it, but BYU could end up having an undefeated season or maybe even a one-loss season. It will make people feel better if you are a BYU fan and say, ‘we are undefeated.’ “

Cougar fans wouldn’t care because the past few years the team has had a pair of 7-6 seasons plus three years ago a 4-9 slate. So, if there is a turnaround and BYU happens to go perfect or lose just one or two games, these fans will be excited for having its team play football and also having a great record.
