BYU QB Wilson Spins Around On Controversial Fumble At Goal Line

HONOLULU, Hawaii – BYU quarterback Zach Wilson suffered a brutal hit and was spun around on a controversial goal line play that resulted in Cougar turnover instead of a touchdown.
The controversial play occurred late in the third quarter of the game between BYU and the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in the SoFi Hawaii Bowl on Tuesday, December 24.
On a 3rd & Goal play from the Hawaii five-yard line, Wilson took the keeper all the way to the edge of the end zone before getting drilled by a Rainbow Warrior defender.

Wilson spun around in the air and fumble the ball on the play. The Mid-American Conference officials for the game ruled that the BYU QB lost control of the ball before crossing the goal line, resulting in a Cougar turnover, and a new possession for Hawaii.

Instead of BYU touchdown to take the lead, the Rainbow Warriors took over with the game still tied at 31 apiece.
After an early fourth quarter field goal by Jake Oldroyd, the Cougars took a 34-31 lead over the Rainbow Warriors.
Wilson was the team’s leading rusher with 9 carries for 51 yards and two touchdowns.
The sophomore quarterback was 21/32 passing for 241 yards and an interception.
