No. 2 BYU Volleyball Sweeps No. 1 Hawaii In Honolulu

HONOLULU, Hawaii – In a battle featuring the two best Men’s Volleyball teams in the country, No. 2 BYU Volleyball defeated No. 1 Hawaii in straight sets at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Not only did BYU (17-0) score a huge win on the islands, but they also dominated the Rainbow Warriors (14-1) who are always a tough team to take down at home. BYU won 25-15, 25-17, and 25-20 in the third and final set.

Junior outside hitter Gabi Garcia Fernandez showed why he’s the leader of this year’s BYU team. Fernandez had 13 of BYU’s 40 kills in the sweep and had a hitting percentage at 68 percent. As a team, BYU had a hitting percentage at .603 percent to Hawaii’s 25 percent. The .603 hitting percentage is BYU’s second-best performance in the rally-era (1999).
BYU Volleyball had a complete team effort in win over No. 1 Hawaii
“What an exciting match to be a part of,” BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said. “It’s hard to focus on one or two guys tonight when this was a complete team effort. Credit to each one of our guys who had a focus this week on consistent pressure and followed the plan. Gabi was confident from the service line and both of our outside hitters had great nights. Wil [Stanley] deserves a lot of credit for the decisions he made throughout the match.”
BYU can’t celebrate too long as they get back on the court against Hawaii again on Friday night in Honolulu. The match starts at 10 p.m. (MT) and can be seen online at BigWest.tv.
