BYU Releases Hat Celebrating 50th Anniversary Of LaVell Edwards Hire

PROVO, Utah – BYU football will honor LaVell Edwards at Senior Day against Utah Tech.
The 2022 season is the 50th anniversary of when Edwards was hired as the head coach at BYU. To commemorate the 50th anniversary, BYU unveiled replica snapback hats of the one Edwards used to wear in the 1990s.

During Edwards’ 29 years as head coach, he became one of the winningest coaches in college football history. Edwards retired from BYU after the 2000 season. In his final home game against New Mexico in 2000, BYU renamed Cougar Stadium after the legendary coach. It remains named today, LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Edwards finished his BYU career with 257 victories during his 29 years as BYU head coach. During his time at BYU, he led the Cougars to 19 WAC Championships.
The highlight of Edwards’s career was an undefeated season in 1984 that culminated with a National Championship. It’s the only undefeated season in BYU football history, and it’s the last time a program outside of the power conferences won a national championship.
Edwards passed away on December 29, 2016; he was 86.
