BYU COUGARS

Three Observations From Another BYU Blowout Win

Oct 25, 2020, 10:47 AM | Updated: Oct 26, 2020, 1:19 am

PROVO, Utah – The undefeated BYU Cougars used a huge second quarter surge to blow past the Texas State bobcats 52-14.

Zach Wilson completed 19 of 25 passes for 287 yards and four touchdowns before turning over the quarterback duties to Baylor Romney in third quarter.

After trailing early 7-0, Wilson and the Cougars scored 49 unanswered points en route to another blowout.

It’s encouraging that BYU is handling business so well against the teams they should be beating. That hasn’t always been the case.

Here are my three observations from the Cougars sixth win of the season.

1. Wilson to Milne connection continues

Zach Wilson to Dax Milne on a deep passing routes is becoming a routine play in 2020. Heading into the matchup versus Texas State, the Cougars were ranked first in explosive plays. That was on full display yet again.

The final touchdown pass of the first half to Milne was the most impressive throw from Wilson this season. Quite possibly the best pass of his career. It was a masterpiece. The pass traveled well beyond the 45 yards credited on the pass.

The array of throws we’ve seen from Wilson this season is ridiculous. He’s clearly in the thick of the Heisman race after another outstanding performance. An invitation would a great accomplishment.

The Boise State matchup looms large now that the Mountain West conference is back in action. If Wilson can lead the Cougars to a decisive victory on the blue turf then the buzz around this team will reach limits BYU hasn’t seen in ages.

2. Isaiah Kaufusi having a great senior season

Kaufusi was one of the leaders on this team during a tumultuous offseason. There’s no doubt his leadership helped this Cougar team navigate a difficult fall camp when the schedule was widdled down to two games.

Thankfully for BYU, he’s showing the high level of play we saw in his sophomore season. His play has helped this defense look the part of being the 13th ranked defense. Yes, the competition hasn’t been great, but the way in which this team has played should overcome the weak strength of schedule.

He become one of many Cougar linebackers to magically stay in bounds while running back an interception to the end zone. It wasn’t quite as impressive as what Fred Warner did in Boise a few years ago, but it was still impressive that he was able to stay in bounds.

3. Navy on Navy uniform combo was awesome

I prefer the royal blue uniforms. They are some of the best uniforms in college football in my opinion. I have to say though, I was feeling the navy on navy uniform combination.

Linebacker Jackson Kaufusi took it to the next level with the grey t-shirt hanging out the bottom. Reminded me of the great 2012 BYU defense.

BYU hasn’t worn the same uniform combination yet this season. I love that. Flashy uniforms are a part of college football these days. There’s no doubt uniforms can catch attention of potential recruits. It’s not the most important thing, but it plays a role.

Here’s to hoping the creativity and jersey choices continue well into the future. There’s plenty of alternative logos that can be incorporated into future choices.

Next up: the blue and tan jersey throwbacks! That might be going too far, but I wouldn’t be mad if they did.
