Zac Seljaas Likes Depth On BYU Basketball’s Roster This Season

Oct 16, 2019, 7:44 PM | Updated: 7:45 pm

PROVO, Utah – BYU senior Zac Seljaas thinks the Cougars have the depth necessary to make a postseason run this year.

The guard is one of seven seniors on BYU’s roster for the 2019-20 season.

“I think we have a really good team and a lot of experience and guys returning. We even have a lot of depth on our bench and our new guys,” said Seljaas. “I think that this team will be really good.”

The Cougars have five more seniors on this year’s squad compared to last season.

“I think just our senior class, our veterans,” said Seljaas. “We have so many guys that have started here or started somewhere else or played a lot of minutes in college basketball and so we have a lot of experience to be able to go through this team.”

BYU adds new players to the roster in Jake Toolson, Alex Barcello, Richard Harward, Trevin Knell, Wyatt Lowell, and Blaze Nield. Although not all the new additions will be eligible to play this season due to transfer rules, the fresh faces give the Cougars new talent to go up against in practice.

“Yeah, it’s like restarting. It’s different. Kind of a unique situation with guys that most everyone’s played with coming in, kind of being reunited almost,” said Seljaas. “It’s kind of fun to be able to do it and it’s just crazy to see where we kinda came from and where we are coming now and how we’re all connected and all changed and become a family now.”

MORE ON BYU BASKETBALL:

Toolson rejoined the Cougars this offseason as a graduate transfer. He was with BYU from 2014-16 before transferring to Utah Valley University.

“It’s awesome,” Seljaas said about Toolson’s return to Provo. “I played with him my freshman year and then he left to go to UVU so it’s nice to have him back. It’s great to have him. He’s such a great player and he’s improved over the years so much and it’ll help our team a lot.”

Seljaas thinks BYU has the horses to get the program back to “The Big Dance” after missing the NCAA tournament every season since 2014-15.

“I think this team can make a run in the NCAA Tournament,” said Seljaas.

The Cougars open the season with Midnight Madness on October 23 at 10:30 p.m. (MDT).
