PROVO, Utah – One month has passed since BYU sophomore quarterback Zach Wilson suffered an injury to the thumb on his throwing hand.

That injury took place after Wilson attempted to make a tackle on a Toledo defender who intercepted a pass of Wilson’s.

Wilson had surgery on his thumb earlier this month and it’s kept him sidelined the past two games. BYU has posted a 1-1 record since he suffered the injury.

With a month now in the rearview mirror for Wilson’s recovery, it begs the question, when will he be returning?

“Zach’s progressing really well. He’s doubtful for this game (against Utah State). It’s a day-to-day thing for him and then once he gets able to throw the ball we’ll kind of wait-and-see how he progresses. He’s ahead of schedule when it comes to his injury,” said BYU head coach Kalani Sitake.

Earlier this month, Sitake also noted that Wilson’s injury was not a season-ending setback and that they expected him to return this season.

In five starts this year, Wilson has thrown for 1,312 yards and completed 62-percent of his passes. Wilson has started a total of 12 games in his BYU career.

Since Wilson was sidelined with his injury, BYU has started two different quarterbacks in replace of him. Redshirt freshman Jaren Hall, who was Wilson’s first backup off the bench, started in the Cougars loss at USF on October 12th. In that loss to the Bulls, Hall suffered a head injury that forced him into team protocol and thus opening the door for Baylor Romney to start the following week.

Romney led BYU to an upset victory over then No. 14 ranked Boise State in Provo, 28-25.

The earliest date for Wilson to return to action would be for BYU’s November 9th game against fellow FBS Independent Liberty.
