Southern Utah Can’t Overcome Slow First Half In Road Loss To Idaho

SALT LAKE CITY – The Southern Utah Thunderbirds couldn’t overcome a slow start as they fell to Idaho 42-24 on the road on Saturday afternoon.
Idaho had a commanding 28-10 halftime lead before both teams scored 14 points in the second half in Southern Utah’s loss.
Justin Miller completed 23 of his 36 pass attempts for 301 yards and one touchdown. The Thunderbirds couldn’t get the ground game going, racking up just 37 yards on 26 carries. Brandon Schenks hauled in six catches for 92 yards and one TD.
Roshaun Johnson had a big game for the Vandals with 174 yards and ran in all six touchdowns on 30 carries.

Johnson had two touchdowns early in the game before SUU answered with a TD run by P. Larson and a field goal early in the second quarter. Idaho closed out the first half with two straight touchdowns by Johnson.
With under 12 minutes left in the third quarter, Miller found Schenks for a 13-yard TD and the Idaho lead was 28-16. Johnson answered with his fifth TD midway through the third and the Vandals had a 34-16 lead entering the fourth.
Miller brought SUU within 11 with a one-yard TD. Johnson put any possible comeback away with his sixth TD midway through the fourth.
Southern Utah dropped their record to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in Big Sky play. They will return home to face rival Weber State in their regular season finale on Saturday, November 13 at 2 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
