Transfer QB Devon Dampier Says He’s Already In Utah Brotherhood

FRISCO, Texas – Utah football quarterback Devon Dampier was named the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, but he’s just focused on the Utes and he’s already completely bought in.
He joined the KSL Sports Zone to talk about the 2025 College Football Season and his first months in Salt Lake City.
The 2025 Big 12 Football Media Days is held at The Star, the Dallas Cowboys’ headquarters, on July 8 and 9.

Coming into a program that is as established and as culture-dependent as Utah can be daunting.
Dampier explained that he was a bit nervous to meet head coach Kyle Whittingham, but quickly learned how easy to talk to and smart the 20-year coaching veteran was.
“Everybody speaks highly of Coach (Kyle Whittingham),” Dampier said. “He’s that guy. When I got to meet him, I was a little nervous. But, He’s a real laid-back guy. Just to hear him speak, you can tell he’s a wise man, he’s been here, he’s done it.”
Dampier is the definition of a dual-threat QB.
However, he doesn’t lean one way or the other. His preference isn’t to scramble; he explained that he just improvises and does whatever the situation calls for. With that said, he is excited to have an elite offensive line for the first time in his college career.
“I play football to win games,” Dampier said. “I’m always going to do what’s best for the situation. I am very excited to drop back there and be protected; it sounds very nice. A lot of quarterbacks don’t have that.”
As previously mentioned, coming into an established program as a transfer isn’t easy. Especially for a quarterback.
Dampier said that he fit right in and already feels like he is a part of the Utah football family.
“That culture, it’s all built on brotherhood,” Dampier said. “It’s all built on how much you care about the next guy. What are you willing to put down for them to win these games? I feel like I’m right in there.”
Big 12 Football 2025
Arizona State, which was picked to finish last in the 2024 preseason media poll, won the championship during its inaugural season in the Big 12.
The Big 12 is preparing for its second season as a 16-team league.

Last season, BYU finished with an 11-2 record and a 7-2 conference record. Utah was the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 during its first year, but ended up finishing 5-7 overall and 2-7 in league games.
