LOGAN – Utah State’s defense set the tone Saturday night. Its offense supplied just enough scoring and kept the clock moving down the stretch.

The Aggies earned their second straight home win with a 17-10 victory over the Bulldogs, improving to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in Pac-12 play. With its Pac-12 championship game hopes still alive, Utah State leaned on a formula that worked: pressure on defense, timely plays from quarterback McCae Hillstead and a rushing attack that produced both touchdowns.

USU held Fresno State to 73 yards in the first half and finished with 10 tackles for loss, including two sacks. The Aggies forced seven punts, then delivered a fourth-down stop midway through the final quarter, giving their offense a chance to take control of the clock.

Hillstead completed 9 of 14 passes for 117 yards in his second consecutive start and third of the season. Utah State rushed for 152 yards, with Hillstead and junior running back Sesi Vailahi each reaching the end zone.

Safety Brevin Hamblin led the defense with nine tackles, including 1.5 for loss. Linebacker Asher Cunningham added eight tackles.

Recap

Neither offense found traction early, with the teams trading six punts before Hillstead delivered the game’s first big play.

Late in the first quarter, he connected with Anthony Garcia down the sideline for a 37-yard gain. Hillstead followed with a 12-yard scramble, and a targeting penalty moved Utah State to the Fresno State 16.

A pass interference penalty on the opening play of the second quarter gave the Aggies first-and-goal. Vailahi powered in from 2 yards out for his first touchdown of the season and fifth of his college career, putting USU ahead 7-0 after the extra point.

Hillstead completed five of his first six passes, giving Utah State an early passing threat to complement its ground game.

After another Fresno State punt, consecutive double-digit runs by Javen Jacobs and Vailahi moved the Aggies into Bulldogs territory.

Another defensive penalty set up first-and-goal, and Hillstead finished the possession with a 3-yard touchdown scramble to take a 14-0 lead with 9:53 left in the half.

The defense kept Fresno State searching for answers.

Even after the Bulldogs crossed midfield for the first time, Utah State forced another punt.

Hillstead then found Kaina Watson for a 27-yard gain on third down, rolling out and lofting the pass just before the rush arrived.

That possession ended with a turnover on downs, but Fresno State could not capitalize.

The Bulldogs went into halftime with 73 total yards, including minus-3 rushing yards, and had converted just 1 of 7 third-down attempts. They were held scoreless in the first half for the first time since their season opener against USC.

Fresno State opened the second half with its first sustained drive, reaching the red zone before consecutive negative plays forced it to settle for a 32-yard field goal.

The 14-play possession cut Utah State’s lead to 14-3.

The Aggies struggled to build on that advantage.

Hillstead escaped a defensive lineman’s grasp for a 10-yard scramble and a third-down conversion on the next possession, but the drive ended in a punt.

With both offenses struggling to move the ball, Fresno State remained within striking distance into the fourth quarter. A third-down completion from Jayden Mandal to Jake Appleget moved the Bulldogs into field goal range.

Utah State’s defense answered again, stuffing Fresno State on fourth-and-1 to regain possession with 9:15 remaining.

Fresno opened the second half with its first extended drive. The Bulldogs reached the red zone before consecutive negative plays set them behind the chains and forced a field goal attempt.

USU led 14-3 after the 32-yard kick ended the 14-play drive with points,

Hillstead used a vanishing act to keep the next drive alive, escaping a defensive lineman’s grasp before scrambling for ten yards and a third-down conversion. The momentum wouldn’t hold as the drive ended in a punt.

The third period ended with Fresno State driving to the Aggie 39-yard line.

This time, the offense gave its defense some breathing room.

Vailahi hurdled a defender to help keep the drive moving, and Noah White caught a 22-yard pass. Hillstead later exploited a defensive breakdown for a 20-yard scramble, sliding inbounds to keep the clock running.

The Aggies forced Fresno State to use all three timeouts before Kian Afrookhteh kicked a 43-yard field goal for a 17-3 lead with 4:26 remaining. The possession consumed nearly five minutes.

Fresno State added a late touchdown but failed to recover the ensuing onside kick.

Utah State did not need an offensive outburst to keep its bowl hopes alive. It needed one more defensive stand and a drive that made the Bulldogs pay for it. Saturday night, the Aggies delivered both.
