SALT LAKE CITY – Utah State forward Justin Bean scored a career-high to help the Aggies beat the Richmond Spiders in the first game of the Veterans Classic.

The Aggies and Spiders played at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland on Friday, November 12.

USU beat Richmond, 85-74.

It was Ryan Odom’s first victory as Utah State’s head coach.

Bean led the Aggies with a career-high 30 points on 11-16 shooting, including 3-4 from beyond the arc. He added 14 rebounds, one assist, one steal, and a block.

After struggling in the first half and trailing 43-37 at halftime, the Aggies exploded for 48 points over the final 20 minutes. Bean scored 17 of his total during USU’s second half comeback.

Utah State started the second half with a scoring burst to take the lead. Richmond responded to make it a battle midway through the final half. Bean and the Aggies pushed their lead back to double-digits to close out the contest.

The Aggies finished shooting 55.4 percent overall and 44.4 percent from downtown.

Following a strong start, the Spiders cooled off and ended up shooting 40.0 percent from the field, including 43.8 percent on three-pointers.

Grant Golden led Richmond with 24 points, 18 of which came during the first half.

With the win, the Aggies improved to a 1-1 record this season.

Utah State’s next game is in the Myrtle Beach Invitational against Pennsylvania Quakers. The Aggies and Quakers will play on Thursday, November 18 at 12:30 p.m. (MDT). The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and The Zone Sports Network (1280 AM).
