LOGAN, Utah – It was all Utah State Aggies, running the San Jose State Spartans out of the gym in a 105-57 victory. The win was as impressive as the scoreboard indicates, as USU controlled every aspect of the game for 40 minutes. 105 points are the second most for the Aggies this season, trailing the 117 scored in a win over Westminster College.

The Aggies (23-4, 13-3) faced the Spartans (12-16, 5-11) at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Wednesday, February 19.

Utah State shot 57.6 percent, led by a near-perfect Ian Martinez. The former Ute and Terrapin missed two shots all night, finishing 7-of-9 from the field with a pair of threes for 22 points. All 11 Aggies that played scored a point.

Mason Falslev and Dexter Akanno added 13 each, combining for four threes. Falslev added eight assists and four rebounds. Tucker Anderson (11) and Deyton Albury (10) also scored double figures.

USU scored 21 points off 13 Spartan turnovers, finishing the night with 11 steals. Martinez and Falslev had three steals each.

First Half

Utah State scored on six of its first seven possessions, led by five points from Deyton Albury. Combined with an active, aggressive defense, USU took an 18-9 lead into the first media timeout.

The lead grew to 14 when a Tucker Anderson block led to a Dexter Akanno three in transition.

Thanks to a frenzied Aggie defense, San Jose State missed six of its first seven attempts from deep and committed four early turnovers.

Anderson and Ian Martinez nailed back-to-back triples, expanding the lead to 34-19 with less than eight minutes left in the half. USU started the night 6-of-9 from deep.

The Spartans missed ten of eleven shots late in the half. The swoon allowed Utah State to pull away with a 13-2 run. The Aggie’s seventh three made it a 23-point game.

Ian Martinez led all scorers with 12 points, followed by 11 from Mason Falslev. Donavan Yap Jr. led the Spartans with nine points. Five of SJSU’s six giveaways were Aggie steals.

USU led 47-24 at the break.

Second Half

Utah State continued its dominance after halftime.

Leading 52-29, Aubin Gateretse and Falslev combined for a pick and roll that ended with a two-handed slam from Gateretse.

Moments later, another Falslev lob, this time to Karson Templin, gave USU 27 27-point lead.

Utah State blew the Spartans doors off when they made seven straight shots. The final 12:23 became academic, with the Aggies leading 71-36.

A timeout couldn’t cool a white-hot USU team. Anderson and Isaac Johnson hit the 11th and 12th threes of the night to make it a 41-point game. Utah State made its first five threes of the second half and nine consecutive field goals at one point.

Drake Allen nearly brought the house down when he skied to the hoop for a right-handed hammer.

USU finished the night with a 105-57 win.
