‘Kind of poetic’: Dallin Hall, Mason Falslev share milestones in Utah State win

LOGAN – Dallin Hall called it poetic. For two guards who have shared basketball courts since childhood, the milestones came with a fitting exchange of assists.

Mason Falslev delivered the pass for Hall’s 1,000th career point. A few minutes later, Hall returned the favor as Falslev reached 1,500.

Their shared moment highlighted Utah State’s 90-56 win over Omaha on Saturday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, where the Aggies improved to 2-0 behind Falslev’s 22 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

“It means a lot. It’s cool to have the pass come from Mason. I think that’s kind of poetic,” Hall said. “I’m just grateful, honestly, to have an opportunity to be playing in this jersey right now, to still be playing college basketball.”

The fifth-year guard’s appreciation extended beyond the milestone.

“I love my team. I love the way they’ve embraced me. The community has embraced me,” Hall said. “So just a lot of gratitude.”

Hall and Falslev’s connection predates their time in Utah State’s starting backcourt. They began playing against each other in fourth grade and became teammates in seventh grade.

“Back then he joined me. This time I joined him,” Hall said. “But to be out there on the court with him is a lot of fun.”

For head coach Ben Jacobson, the exchange was a reminder of how unusual their opportunity is: childhood friends starting together and helping each other reach career milestones.

“You see them smiling and having a good time, and that matters,” Jacobson said.

Defense sets the tone

The celebration came during another convincing performance by the Aggies, who built a 44-21 halftime lead and later used a 10-0 run to stretch their advantage to 69-32.

Hall credited Omaha for competing while playing on consecutive days, but he also recognized an opportunity to make the Mavericks work.

“Right before the tipoff, I told the guys, like, ‘Hey, this is their back-to-back. We got to play fast,’” Hall said. “And that’s something we put a lot of emphasis on anyways.”

Utah State’s defensive execution helped create that pace. Hall said the Aggies cleaned up their switching to make Omaha’s early looks more difficult and worked to finish possessions with rebounds.

“When we make teams shoot tough shots, and we rebound, we’re a top defensive team in the country,” the former BYU guard said.

Jacobson saw progress in the communication that makes those switches work, but he wasn’t ready to call the performance a finished product.

“The one area that let us down defensively was our defensive rebounding,” Jacobson said. “We’ve had stretches where we’ve rebounded great defensively, and we’ve had too many stretches already … where we have not rebounded it well enough.”

The starting guards helped cover that responsibility. Falslev and Hall combined for 17 rebounds, reinforcing Jacobson’s expectation that finishing defensive possessions cannot fall solely on the frontcourt.

“Rebounding is a five-person job,” Jacobson said. “There’s five of us out there.”

For Hall, that work is central to his role, even on a day when his scoring earned recognition.

“I’m just trying to make winning plays,” he said. “That’s what I’ve always prided myself on, is helping the team win.”

Solomon Callaghan finds his range

Falslev led the offense, but Solomon Callaghan provided an important perimeter contribution. The Wright State transfer scored 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including four makes in six attempts from 3-point range.

Hall said Callaghan’s production reflected the shooter his teammates had watched throughout the offseason, not a sudden change after an uneven exhibition stretch.

“He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around,” Hall said. “He’s constantly in the gym in the early mornings, in the late nights. And he was just going through a little bit of a stretch where the ball wasn’t going in.”

Teammates encouraged him to keep shooting.

“We need you to keep letting it fly,” Hall said of their message. “We all know what the result will be eventually.”

Jacobson expressed similar confidence in the team’s perimeter shooting.

“I believe that we are and that we’re going to be a very good three-point shooting team this year,” he said.

Next up: Utah Tech

Utah State continues its home stretch Tuesday, Nov. 10, against Utah Tech. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Spectrum, with a free livestream on the Pac-12’s YouTube channel.

The Aggies enter that matchup with encouraging signs: an established backcourt connection, a productive shooting performance from Callaghan, and improving defensive communication.

The next step is consistency.

Jacobson wants better defensive rebounding and sharper attention to opposing shooters. Despite the result against Omaha, he noted that the Mavericks’ two best perimeter threats combined for 15 attempts from beyond the arc — more opportunities than he wanted to concede.

“Our attention to detail in that aspect is going to have to be better,” Jacobson said.

For Hall, Tuesday’s approach will mirror what shaped his milestone afternoon: contribute wherever the game demands it.

“I’m trying to just make winning plays and help my team win,” he said.
