LOGAN, Utah- Utah State fell in a high-scoring shootout to the Washington State Cougars last Saturday night, making it seven losses in their last eight games. With three games remaining, is there still time for the Aggies to find some silver linings?

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (4-6) will make the voyage to the mainland to take on the Utah State Aggies (2-7) at Maverik Stadium on Saturday, November 16, at 1:00 p.m. MT.

Utah State and Hawaii both currently sit in the bottom half of the Mountain West Conference standings but with only a few weeks remaining in the regular season, the Rainbow Warriors are fighting to get to six wins to become bowl-eligible.

Storylines For Utah State

Rahsul Faison

Utah State’s starting running back Rahsul Faison has been a bright spot on the field throughout the year. Faison is averaging 89 rushing yards per game and has six touchdowns on the year. He suffered a knee injury in the Aggies’ win at Wyoming, making him a nonfactor against Washington State, as he only carried the ball twice for three yards.

concerning his status not only for Saturday but for the remainder of the season, Head Coach Nate Dreiling said, “He should be good to go this weekend. He was probable last weekend but the flights just didn’t help, the swelling in his knee was a little bit too much, he couldn’t push off of it… I’m pretty close to being 100% sure that we’ll have him this weekend.”

Youth On The Defensive Line

Through nine games, 12 Aggies have suffered season-ending injuries, many of them on the defensive line. Defensive ends Blaine Spires, Taz Williams, Enoka Migao, and Gabe Peterson as well as defensive tackle Miguel Jackson are all sidelined for the remainder of the campaign, meaning less experienced guys are having to step up in the trenches.

“Gabe Iniguez has kind of been the one ‘founding father’ that we have still playing on the D-line. Other than that, [Isaiah] Bruce was kind of in that five to six as far as the depth chart after fall camp… and also Bo Maile who’s maybe the most improved player on our team, but he was right around that fourth and fifth spot. We have guys that we really weren’t expecting maybe to count on as much but have come in and done an unbelievable job… I can’t be more proud of our D-line, how much guys have had to step up and play significant snaps.”

Stepping into a bigger role, Isaiah Bruce has 11 total tackles and forced a fumble against the Cougars, and Bo Maile has 14 total tackles.

Connection Between The Aggies And Rainbow Warriors

Utah State’s roster features three players from the Hawaiian Islands: DT Braydon Bailey from Kona, Big Island, WR Kahanu Davis from Kalaheo, Kauai, and Tabo Motu’apuaka from Honolulu, O’ahu. Additionally, both programs have a long history of players of Polynesian descent, making a matchup between the Aggies and Rainbow Warriors a family affair.

“Any time you’ve got two teams doing the Haka pregame, I think that’s always special,” “I know our guys are going to be extra fired up, I know Hawaii obviously is going to continue to play hard… It’s gonna be a fun game and I know we’ll have a lot of friends versus friends going on out there.”

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

The last time out for Hawaii was in Honolulu against UNLV. The Rainbow Warriors came up just short of the upset, losing 29-27 to the Mountain West Championship hopefuls. Hawaii runs a pass-heavy offense with 19 of their 30 touchdowns coming through the air. Quarterback Brayden Schager has thrown for 2,467 yards so far this year, averaging 247 yards per game. His two main targets have been Nick Cenacle and Pofele Ashlock with five touchdowns each and almost identical numbers across the board. The Rainbow Warriors only have one remaining game after their trip to Logan, a home battle with New Mexico. They will need to win both in order to become bowl-eligible, adding an extra layer of motivation down the home stretch. Timmy Chang is in his third year as head coach at Hawaii and is seeking to take his team to a bowl game for the first time in his tenure.
