Love, Thompson Lead Aggies On Record Setting Day

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State crushed San Jose State 62-24 for their eighth straight win, fueled by a record setting performance by their offense, which racked up 804 yards. It was the most yards gained by an Aggie team in the school’s history and the third most gained by an offense in the country this season.

“I see these guys every single day, we go against them every single day, but to watch them in action I’m like, ‘what is going on’,” senior safety Jontrell Rocquemore said after the game. “They’re phenomenal.”

The Aggies also broke the team record for points scored in a season with 520, with 3, possibly 4 games left.

I’m always amazed,” quarterback Jordan Love said. “It’s just a really fun thing to be a part of.”

And how can he not be having fun? Love threw for 491 yards today on 32 completions, both career highs for the sophomore.

“Jordan Love would be breaking a lot of records if I let him play longer in the 2^nd half of some of these games,” head coach Matt Wells said. “The guy just threw for 500 yards and he played for 2 and a half quarters.”

And that’s how it’s been for most of the games this season. Love has not played in 12 quarters so far because of the offensive efficiency. “That’s 3 games,” Wells added.

With Love in the spotlight every week, and deservedly so, it’s easy to overlook a player like Darwin Thompson. Thompson ran for 140 yards on 9 carries and caught 4 passes for 115 yards with 3 total touchdowns.

“He’s just fun to watch,” Love said of his backfield counterpart. “He can break a lot of tackles, he can run good, he can catch it.”

Thompson has scored a touchdown in every game this season except BYU and caught a pass in every game except Air Force. With weapons like Thompson surrounding a quarterback like Love, there is still untapped potential according to Wells.

“We had 804 yards of total offense and we pull our starters in the 3^rd quarter. I think there’s a lot out there still.”

If that’s true, it’s a scary thought for the remaining teams on the schedule.
