SALT LAKE CITY – Utah State head coach Blake Anderson said he was pleased with the way his team approached their spring football scrimmage.

The Aggies held a scrimmage at Maverik Stadium on Saturday, April 9.

After the practice, Anderson shared his thoughts with the media.

“I was pleased with the way we came out and kind of approached it,” Anderson said of his team. “The energy level was good, which the first thing I always look for is effort and you can see effort in all areas.”

Anderson, who is entering his second season as the Aggies’ head coach went on to highlight the performance of his defense and the way the offense responded throughout the scrimmage.

“I thought the defense came out — it did a good job in open field,” Anderson said. “Obviously, we had way too many turnovers offensively to be happy about that. But I was pleased with the way the offense responded.”

He added that the USU offense “did a better job” inside the red zone.

Backup quarterback Cooper Legas played with the first team offense due to starting QB Logan Bonner sitting out spring football.

Anderson said that the “biggest thing” for him to see in the scrimmage was “the new guys starting to show up.”

“We brought in a handful of transfers at midterm,” the coach highlighted. “This is really the first good opportunity for them to be out there without coaches telling them what to do and I think you saw a lot of those guys step up.”

Anderson was pleased with his team’s progress but added that the Aggies still have more work to do leading up to their spring game in a week and a half.

Utah State will play its annual Blue vs. White game on Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m. (MDT).

“Season will be here before we know it,” Anderson finished. “Luckily, we still got a little bit of time to keep working.”

Last season in his first year with the program, Anderson led the Aggies to an 11-3 record, including a Mountain West Conference title game victory over a ranked San Diego State team.

The Aggies kick off their 2022 slate at home against UConn on Saturday, August 27.
