LOGAN, Utah – The Utah State football team held their first scrimmage of the spring and the first under new head coach Blake Anderson on Saturday afternoon.

It’s an important spring for the Utah State football program as the players are trying to get to know the new coaching staff and their style of play.

“Really pleased with the day, it was a beautiful day, and I was pleased that we had really good energy,” Anderson said. “The guys are getting a good grasp of how hard we want to play. We are not there yet, but we have a good foundation. We don’t quite understand how to play fast yet on offense, but we will get there, and it is getting better daily. I loved the fact that the defense created some turnovers after giving up some big plays early. They showed some resiliency and finished better than they started.”

The scrimmage was roughly 120 plays as Utah State’s offense gained 795 yards during the scrimmage, 412 rushing and 383 passing, while scoring three touchdowns. Utah State’s defense had three interceptions and one fumble. Two of the forced turnovers were taken to the house.

Sophomore quarterback and former Orem High School star Cooper Legas led the offense on two of the three scoring drives, connecting with Derek Wright on both touchdowns. Legas finished the scrimmage completing 16 of his 20 pass attempts for 182 yards and two TD’s. The four quarterbacks that competed in the scrimmage combined for 32-of-56 passing for 383 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

In the run game, Elelyon Noa led the way with 112 yards on seven carries. John Gentry racked up 63 yards on 11 carries. Former Utah and BYU RB Devonta’e Henry-Cole ran the ball eight times for 57 yards.

The Aggies will hold eight more practice sessions in spring ball and will play their blue vs. white game on Saturday, April 17 at 2 p.m. MT.
