LOGAN, Utah – When Utah State football takes the field on Saturday against Fresno State, Maverik Stadium will not have fans in attendance.

The decision made by Athletics Director John Hartwell is based off recommendations and safety guidelines from university, local and state officials due to increased COVID-19 hospitalizations and unsustainable case rates in Utah.

To this point, the restrictions only apply for this weekend’s football game.

This Saturday with be the Aggies’ second home game of the 2020 season. In their home opener against Fresno State, 5,116 fans were in attendance. Utah State is currently 0-3 after falling to Nevada last Thursday. Hartwell fired head coach Gary Andersen on Saturday and named assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Frank Maile interim head coach.

“This is not a knee jerk reaction, this is not a, you know, a one day or a one game or a one event type thing,” Hartwell told the media on Monday. “He (Gary Andersen) and I have been in close conversation and meetings. The first three weeks, other than a snippet here or there was not Aggie football as we’ve grown accustomed to the success level, and really, other than maybe the first quarter of the Nevada game the other night, we really weren’t in contention in any of those games and that’s not the product he wanted. That’s not what I want. It’s not what any of Aggie nation wanted.”

The Bulldogs are currently 2-1 on the year with wins over UNLV and Colorado State, while falling to Hawai’i in their season opener.

The Aggies will play their first game since Andersen’s departure on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. MT against Fresno State on FS2.
