SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah State’s quarterbacks find themselves in the middle of a battle to be the Aggies’ starter while simultaneously learning a new offensive scheme this spring.

In addition to 2020 starter Andrew Peasley, the Aggies have three sophomore gunslingers in practice in Cooper Legas, Josh Calvin and Garrett Larson.

USU also added transfer quarterback Logan Bonner from Arkansas State.

The five quarterbacks are busy fighting to become Utah State’s starting quarterback while also learning a new offensive system under new head coach Blake Anderson and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Anthony Tucker.

“I’ve been really happy seeing what the quarterbacks have done from day one to now,”  Tucker recently said. “We ask our quarterbacks to do a lot. We ask them to invest a lot of their time on their own, because they are basically driving the ship, as far as understanding what we’re trying to do and being able to communicate what we’re trying to do, being able to really absorb the system. I’ve been really happy with their progress. From day one to now, it’s like night and day. Now, we’ve got to continue to take that next step as we head on into fall camp and into the season.”

Last season, Peasley played in multiple games and led USU to its only win of the year.

He finished the season passing for 391 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions with a 53.6 percent completion rate.

This spring, Peasley said the quarterbacks are working on understanding the offense and playing faster.

“We have been focusing on learning the offense and playing fast and playing with pace,” said Peasley. “We try to get our playmakers in space and take a lot of shots in this offense, but we can also run the ball at a fast tempo, so I think it will be really good for our team. I love it.”

Legas, Calvin and Larson have yet to see game action with the Aggies.

Bonner, who played under Anderson for five seasons at Arkansas State, has played in 24 college football games, including 15 starts.

He’s thrown for 3,166 yards, 30 touchdown, and nine interceptions with a 57.8 completion rate.

Tucker said he’s happy with the foundation the quarterbacks have built this spring.

“To sum it up, the biggest thing is, when you build a house, it starts with the foundation. If the foundation isn’t built the right way, the house is going to come down,” Tucker continued. “First and foremost, getting guys to buy in to the way we want to play, the way we want to train, the way we want to prepare, it’s been unbelievable the investment that the guys have given us, the trust that the guys have given us in the first three months we have been here. I’ve been really happy with that. We have built a really good foundation as we head into our summer training and giving guys a little time off before we really get it rolling.”

Utah State will have its spring scrimmage at Maverik Stadium on Saturday, April 17 at 2 p.m. (MDT).
