SALT LAKE CITY – As Utah State continues preparations to take on the No. 5 LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge, history is not on the side of the Aggies.

The last time Utah State defeated a Power Five program on the road was 48 years when the Aggies took down Kansas State from the Big 8 Conference in Manhattan, Kansas.

48 years. What makes that stat even tougher to handle for Aggie fans is that there have been so many close calls on the road against P5/BCS/Alliance teams that at some point USU is bound to breakthrough.

Since that road win at Kansas State 48 years ago, the Aggies only have two other wins against programs from Power Five leagues. Both were at home in Logan against Utah in 2012 and Wake Forest in 2014.

Close calls against Oklahoma in 2010, Auburn in 2011, Wisconsin in 2012, Michigan State in 2018, and Wake Forest this year have haunted the Aggies as opportunities have been right in front of them to end the four decade-plus drought.

Saturday might be the toughest yet as LSU, like Utah State, features one of the best offenses in college football. The Tigers have always had an elite defense, but now with quarterback Joe Burrow, the Tigers have an offense that is no longer viewed as a liability.

But if anyone can lead the Aggies to a historic performance to end a long losing streak, it would be junior quarterback Jordan Love who tackles the biggest stage of his Aggie career.

LSU is currently a 27 1/2-point favorite heading into Saturday’s game that kicks off at 10 a.m. (MDT) on SEC Network.
