LOGAN, Utah – After trailing by just three points in the first half, Utah State couldn’t get anything going in the second half in their 38-7 loss to San Diego State.

Jason Shelley’s debut last week didn’t go as well as expected, throwing for just 92 yards. This week against SDSU, Shelley threw for 88 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Former Ute Devonta’e Henry-Cole got the start at running back, recording 27 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Utah State was without starting running back Jaylen Warren, who sat out with an injury. He rushed for two touchdowns in the season opening loss to Boise State last week.

First Half Saved By Late TD

Utah State was fortunate to trail by 3 points. The Aztecs could’ve scored six more points but missed two field goals in the opening half. They missed tries from 45 and 33 yards.

Just before halftime, Shelley heaved up a pass to the end zone that was caught by Deven Thompkins for a 37-yard TD to trim the lead to 10-7 at the half.

At the break, the Aggies had just 136 yards, 88 passing and 48 rushing. Shelley completed 13-of-20 passes for 88 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Thompkins hauled in 3 receptions for 40 yards and a score.

Second Half Struggles

After getting a spark before halftime on the Jason Shelley to Deven Thompkins touchdown, Utah State couldn’t get anything going on either side of the ball. Utah State didn’t score and allowed San Diego State to drop 28 points in the second half.

The Aztecs racked up 570 total yards of offense, 163 passing and 407 rushing. USU was only able to gain 215 yards, 112 passing, 103 rushing. San Diego State nearly had two 100-yard rushers with Greg Bell getting 157 yards and Chance Bell with 98 yards on the ground.

Utah State dropped their record to 0-2 on the season. They will have a short turnaround as they will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 5 at Nevada. The game will kickoff at 4 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on FS1.
