SALT LAKE CITY – Kyle Whittingham‘s decision to leave the University of Utah won’t mark the end of his storied coaching career after all.
Although Utah never used the word “retirement” when announcing he would step down—and naming Morgan Scalley as his successor the next day—few expected his subsequent move to come so quickly.

Following 32 seasons with the program and 21 years as the head coach, Whittingham will turn in his ‘Utah Man I Am’ gear to become a Michigan Man with the maize and blue Michigan Wolverines.

On Friday, December 26, the University of Michigan gave its fanbase a late Christmas gift when it named Whittingham the program’s 22nd head coach.
A reeling Wolverines program brings the winningest coach in Utah history in for stability and experience after the firing of Sherrone Moore amid his ongoing legal issues.
After becoming the face of the Utah football program, his move to Ann Arbor marks one of the most significant coaching shifts in recent college football memory.

Kyle Whittingham was for sure gearing himself up to retire all year long. Even last year. But when the best coach in program history calls an audible and wants to stay. You let him. Otherwise it gets weird and ugly. Now here we are .

– Morgan Scalley is certainly more than qualified to be the HC at Utah and will do a tremendous job for decades to come
– Utah horribly mismanaged the transition of power, causing a Ute legend to finish his career somewhere else.
