SALT LAKE CITY — Utah has added it’s third commit of the day,  as Texas wide receiver Darnell Jackson Jr. announced his commitment to the Utes, choosing Utah over fellow finalists Northwestern and Texas State.

His decision comes on the heels of Timpview’s Ian Aloisio and Fui Vakapuna committing, and gives Morgan Scalley’s class a dynamic offensive weapon. The staff has been stacking promising pieces, local wins, and now another receiver with upside from one of the most important recruiting states in the country.

It is also another recruiting win with some context behind it. Northwestern offered the academic and Big Ten angle. Texas State gave Jackson a closer-to-home option with offensive opportunity. Utah won by selling development, Power Four football, a clear offensive vision and a chance to become part of the next wave of the program.

How Jackson Fits Utah’s Offense

Jackson’s evaluation starts with speed. He is not just “football fast.” He has legitimate track-backed speed, including multiple sub-10.5-second times in the 100 meters and a personal best of 10.08 seconds. That kind of top-end speed immediately changes the projection because it gives Utah a receiver with a true vertical element and the ability to stress defensive backs before the ball is even snapped.

He also shows the change-of-direction ability and short-area quickness needed to become more than a track athlete playing receiver. His ability to redirect, plant and accelerate gives him a chance to develop as a route runner, especially on underneath concepts, screens, quick game touches and routes that allow him to use his burst after the catch.

For Utah, the key will be turning those athletic tools into a complete receiver skill set. That means improving his release package, sharpening his route detail, learning how to attack leverage and becoming more consistent with the timing and physicality required at the college level.

You cannot teach 10.08 speed. Utah is betting on a rare athletic trait and giving Chad Bumphis a receiver with explosive tools to develop. If Jackson continues to grow as a route runner, adds strength and becomes more refined in contested and traffic situations, he has the ceiling to become a real field-stretching weapon in Kevin McGiven’s offense.

At minimum, his speed gives Utah something every offense needs: a player defenses have to account for vertically.

Utah Adds Another Receiver To The Class

Jackson’s commitment continues Utah’s push into Texas while giving offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven and wide receivers coach Chad Bumphis another young pass catcher to develop.

The Utes have made it clear they want to reshape and restock the receiver room with different body types and skill sets. They have already added length, versatility and in-state playmaking upside in the class. Jackson now gives Utah another option from Texas, where the Utes have become more active in recent cycles.

Utah’s offense under McGiven needs more answers on the perimeter. The Utes need players who can win routes, create separation, threaten space and give quarterbacks more reliable targets. Recruiting receivers is not just about adding numbers. It is about finding players who can fit into specific roles and eventually give the offense more flexibility, efficiency, and explosiveness.

The Bottom Line

Darnell Jackson Jr. joins Ian Aloisio and Fui Vakapuna in joining Utah’s 2027 recruiting class, giving Scalley’s squad another out-of-state win from Texas.

The Utes have long made the state of Texas a clear part of their recruiting strategy. Landing Jackson gives Utah another Texas prospect in the class and another relationship win in a state that will remain important moving forward.

Choosing the Utes over Northwestern and Texas State says something about Utah’s pitch. The staff sold development, fit and Power Four opportunity well enough to beat two very different finalists.

Jackson has the athleticism to make an immediate impact, but he will need time to reach his full potential. Utah needed to keep adding receiver talent, and Jackson gives the Utes another young pass catcher with room to grow inside Kevin McGiven’s offense and Chad Bumphis’ receiver room.

For Utah, this is another very solid recruiting win in a class that continues to build piece by piece.
