Devon Dampier’s Status Unclear, Byrd Ficklin Might Be The Answer For Utah This Week

SALT LAKE CITY — The question hovering over the Wasatch Front this week isn’t just whether Utah can bounce back from its gut-punch rivalry loss to BYU — it’s who will be under center when the Utes take the field against Colorado.

After leaving Saturday’s 24–21 defeat with an apparent lower-body injury, quarterback Devon Dampier’s status remains uncertain. Kyle Whittingham confirmed Monday that the staff will need a few days to evaluate his recovery, saying:

“We have to wait a few days to see how these guys are healing up from the game, so that’s a distinct possibility, I can tell you that. On Wednesday you’ll start getting the availability report and the likelihood of who’s playing and who’s not.”

That “distinct possibility” is true freshman Byrd Ficklin.

This is Devon Dampier’s team

Let’s make one thing clear: this is Devon Dampier’s team. He has been dynamic and a huge improvement at the position for the program.

He’s brought stability, leadership, and dynamic playmaking potential that has been absent for a few years. Through seven games, he’s No. 10 in the country in QBR. He’s averaging 256.7 total yards per game, and has accounted for 18 total touchdowns (13 passing, 5 rushing).

Dampier has given Utah a new offensive identity — dynamic, fast, confident, and electric both through the air and on the ground. The junior has accounted for nearly than 2,000 yards of total offense, seven games into the season.

He has been the steady, emotional heartbeat of the locker room. That is something Utah will need as they look to move forward after a tough rivalry game loss.

“I think our team played hard, so did they,” Dampier said. “The great thing about football, you get another week to prove yourself, and play the way you always do.”

Whittingham didn’t downplay that reality either, emphasizing the leadership void any absence would create.

“His presence is huge for us, he’s grown into that role, and guys respond to him,” Whittingham shared. “Devon’s been a great quarterback for us, he’s No. 10 in the country in QBR, which is the best measure of how your quarterback’s playing.”

Could “Byrd” be the word this week?

Given how hampered he looked late in the game, there’s a real possibility Dampier can’t go, and it’ll likely be true freshman Byrd Ficklin taking his place.

“Byrd Ficklin we have a ton of confidence in, every time he’s entered a game so far this year, he’s done positive things,” Whittingham said.

Not only is it a distinct possibility he starts, but Whittingham all but confirmed that Ficklin’s performance has moved him into the backup role.

“Performance in practice, performance in games,” Whittingham responded when asked about Ficklin’s seeming move to the backup spot. “He just doesn’t operate like a true freshman, he’s got a lot of self-confidence, and a lot of ability.”

In limited action, Ficklin has provided some really exciting flashes. In six appearance so far this season, Ficklin is 9-of-9 throwing the ball, producing 138 yards and one touchdown. He’s also ran for 111 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.

“I’m confident in all the quarterbacks,” Ryan Davis said at Tuesday’s availability. “Whoever is out there, I’m fully confident in, I know they can play, they know the offense real well.”

However, preparing to start compared to playing in garbage time is very different. This week is an important one for Utah to bounce back, and with Dampier’s pending status, the freshman needs to have a sharp week of practice.

The process to the decision

The Utes enter Colorado week in a tricky spot — trying to stabilize after the emotional swing of the BYU loss while preserving their starting quarterback’s health for the stretch run.

Utah’s still alive in the Big 12 race, but if Dampier is limited by injury that isn’t properly healed, it impacts his ability to performa at a high level.

With Ficklin, Utah will sink a lot of practice reps into him early on in the week. That’s in-part to give time to Dampier to heal and recover. Depending on Dampier’s status, the reps later in the week will either revert back to him or remain with Ficklin.

“Byrd gets more reps early in the week as Dev heals up from the game,” Whittingham shared in his Tuesday availability. “We’d like to have it decided by Friday, sooner if possible, but it could go to Friday.”

This week becomes a balancing act between risk and reward. Push him too early, and you risk turning a one-week injury into a multi-game setback.
