Devon Dampier’s Rise Is Grounded In Team-First Mentality With Utah

Sep 16, 2025, 1:46 PM

SALT LAKE CITY— Three weeks into the 2025 season, Utah quarterback Devon Dampier hasn’t just taken over the offense—he’s seemingly lifted the spirits of the entire program.

His play has been electric, his mindset steady, and his leadership unmistakable. He’s put himself into the early Heisman Trophy conversation, but that’s not at all where his focus is.

For a Utah team entering its Big 12 slate against Texas Tech this weekend, having a quarterback who can both deliver big plays and command the locker room can be the difference between being a nice story and being a legitimate contender.

Despite the growing recognition, Devon Dampier has kept the main thing, the main thing

Utah has long been defined by physical defense, disciplined play, and a “chip on the shoulder” mentality. Quarterbacks here aren’t simply asked to pile up stats; they’re asked to embody the identity of the program. Dampier seems to have grasped that from day one.

He’s leaned on his teammates as much as they’ve leaned on him, describing his mindset this week as keeping “football, football, and lean on your teammates.”

That approach has fed into his confidence on the field. “It gives me a lot of confidence to go out there and believe we’re going to get it done on both sides,” Dampier explained. “So, just trusting one another that we’re all going to do our assignments the best we can.”

In a sport where quarterbacks often absorb the spotlight, Dampier has turned attention back to the roster around him. He spoke openly about the importance of elevating his teammates.

“I feel like I’ve been able to gain the respect of my teammates, and I’m able to bring them up more, just get the best out of them,” he explained. “I can’t play this sport alone, and a lot of these guys are great. There are some dogs on this offense, so to see them at their best, I think that’s something I’ve put a lot of work into doing.”

Devon Dampier earns an A+ so far, according to Kyle Whittingham

Dampier’s production through three games speaks for itself, as he’s already put himself on the map of the Heisman Trophy race.

By accounting for seven total touchdowns without throwing an interception. He’s averaging better than 75 rushing yards per game, including two outings with 85 or more, while showing steady command of the passing game.

His most recent performance—27 of 41 for 230 yards and two scores, paired with 86 yards on the ground—was another example of how his dual-threat ability stresses defenses.

Whittingham has often said his best teams are those with strong player leadership in the locker room. With Dampier, he appears to have exactly that—someone who can lead not just with his playmaking, but with his presence.

Kyle Whittingham, when asked to evaluate Dampier’s start, left no room for doubt. He said he’d give his quarterback “an A+,” noting not only what he’s doing statistically but also the intangible value of his leadership.

Whittingham emphasized that Dampier is completing passes at a high rate, protecting the football, and serving as the team’s leading rusher. “He’s doing it all, and we just have to keep being intelligent with how we use him,” Whittingham said, before adding: “Couldn’t have been any better than what he’s done, and his numbers really speak to that.”

Jason Beck has seen consistent growth over the last year

Much of Dampier’s success also stems from the trust between quarterback and offensive coordinator Jason Beck. Known for tailoring his schemes to a quarterback’s strengths, Beck has praised Dampier’s growth since arriving in Salt Lake City.

“He’s just kind of grown the entire time, since a year ago, when we started early in the season and through this point, he just continues to improve, continues to get better.”

Beck noted that one of the biggest areas of progress has been decision-making. Dampier has been smarter about avoiding unnecessary hits, either by sliding, getting out of bounds, or simply living to fight another down.

“Just always looking to improve our decision-making and the choices we’re making, that’s one of the things Dev does best,” Beck said. He also pointed out that many plays carry multiple options, and Dampier’s ability to read defenses and choose the right one—whether handing off, throwing, or pulling it down himself—has made the offense more efficient.

“You don’t necessarily see it, but he has a lot of options on each play,” Beck explained. “Not each play, but on several plays, he has a lot of options. He’s making really good choices of when to hand it, when to pull and throw, when to pull and run, all those different things.”

At Utah, quarterbacks are judged on how they carry the program as much as how they carry the ball. Through three weeks, Dampier has done both. He’s the team’s leading rusher, a steady hand in the passing game, and a leader who has quickly earned the respect of veterans and newcomers alike.

The Utes are still only three games into a long season, but the signs are clear. Dampier isn’t just Utah’s quarterback—he’s the heartbeat of a team aiming to make noise in the Big 12 and beyond.
