SALT LAKE CITY After being listed as questionable on Utah’s previous two availability reports, Devon Dampier’s status changed Friday night.

“We have to wait a few days to see how he’s healing up from the game,” Kyle Whittingham said at his Monday press conference.

That wait mattered for Dampier in particular. After initially being listed as “questionable” on Wednesday and Thursday, Dampier was listed as “probable” on Friday night’s report.

Utah’s Availability Report

Though not listed, Utah’s previous players listed as “Out” are still out.

  • OUT: Dallas Vakalahi, Tobias Merriweather
  • PROBABLE: Devon Dampier

After previously being listed as “out” on previous reports, S Rabbit Evans, S Nate Ritchie, WR Daidren Zipperer, TE Hunter Andrews, DE Paul Fitzgerald, OL Isaiah Garcia have been removed from the report.

That’s due to a Big 12 rule on the reporting, not an improvement in status. According to the Big 12, once players are reported to the league as season-ending, they only have to be reported as “out” on at least one report before they can be removed from the list.

So, even though Whittingham shared that Ritchie was not season-ending, his removal suggests that he is in fact out for the rest of year.

Will Utah go with Devon Dampier or Byrd Ficklin?

Now that Dampier’s status has improved, there is still a question around whether or not he will actually lead the offense Saturday night. It’s important to keep in mind that the report is only for availability.

“That’s a distinct possibility,” Whittingham said of the Ficklin potentially starting. “We’ll know more mid-week.”

Whittingham made it clear that Ficklin starting this weekend is a real possibility. The staff spent the week evaluating Ficklin’s performance in practice, as well as Dampier’s health.

Colorado’s Availability Report

The availability report is much longer for the Colorado Buffs. In total, there are 17 players listed as “Out” and four others that are at least “Questionable.”

  • OUT: WR Hykeem Williams, CB Makari Vickers, RB Simeon Price, OL Yaya Attia, OL Aki Ogunbiyi
  • DOUBTFUL: CB RJ Johnson
  • QUESTIONABLE: S Carter Stoutmire, DE Nikhill Webb Walker

What’s at stake

For Utah, the matchup carries more than just bounce-back pride. A win keeps the Utes in the thick of the Big 12 race; a loss would mark back-to-back setbacks. Health could define their path, and all eyes will be on Dampier’s status this week.
